BBD 9/27/17. Pours a very hazy dark amber with a slight reddish tint. Massive head and lacing that retains well. The nose is subdued, but of dates/figs, dark malt and Belgian yeast. The body is on the heavy side of medium with a nice slick mouthfeel. Normal carbonation level with a touch of effervescence on the finish. The wonderful flavor profile is quite complex, yet balanced. It begins with a multitude of dark fruit flavors - fig, date, raisin, plum - then flows to a mild malt sweetness over a well subdued alcohol phenolic note. The finish is smooth, yet also almost clean. A slight residual alcohol burn with associated phenolics linger a bit. This is the best Belgian I’ve ever had.

33 cl bottle from Tosano. Deep red/mahogany color, yellowish-white head, bubbly, sadly disappearing, a bit sparkling. Flaky sediments on the bottle, almost clear which become cloudy when those gets in. Some berries on the nose. Aroma is prominently sugary upfront, syrup, burned caramel, berries/cranberries, black grapes, ripe fruit. Fuel notes explodes already, quite burning. Then a solid cakey malts backing follows, with mild leafy hops. Pronounced hearthy yeast notes, with old furniture, wine and wood. Taste is initially sugary, cleaned by smooth bitternes and ends up mild sour. Body isn’t thick as i would have expected, fairly thin texture, sustained carbonation, dry alcoholi finish. Pours a dark tawny brown with a modest tan head that recedes to small pockets of foam. There is some yeast sediment visible. Aroma is dried figs. Taste is medium sweet with a slightly drier finish. There are notes of raisin, vanilla bourbon, a little roasted malt, and a little candy. Medium bodied with a lively carbonation. This is a delicious beer offering some complexity while remaining approachable to a less experienced palate. It’s a great introduction to Belgian beers.

I picked up this bottle at Amstein. I drank it at home few days with Massimo, in Lausanne. It was not the first beer of the night, after a good meal, we drank this trappist with a lot of pleasure, from a country so nice for the malt and hop. Firstly, the body is a beauty for your eyes: brown/orange/transparent, white and brown foam, carbonation a bit lower than usual. The taste is subtle and complex, if I must describe one impression is that the taste is really sweet for the palate, if I compare one Orval that it is more robust. It is malty, plum, sugar grape, nutes, porto, some hop but it is dscreet. The impression is perfect. I will rerate this beer these next months, next one please. Pours a foamy beige head and has a copper/light brown appearance with sediments clearly visible. Fairly weak lacing. Nutty and toasty aromas with some mild earthy and spiced hops. Flavours of Belgian yeast, mild roasted malts, some notes of coffee and earthy/resin hops. Also some hints of raisins and a bit of toasty malts and toffee in the finish. Slick and warming sensation. Dark copper brown, mostly unfiltered, with large foam head and some broken ring lace on glass. Medium/Full to Full body.

Bottle @ home, Cellared for 6 years. Dark brown pour with a large fizzy head. Aroma is sweet with syrup, figs, sweet raisins, nuts, dark caramel, milk chocolate, biscuits,, vanilla, sweet candy. Taste is balanced dry and sweet. Medium to high carbonation and average to long duration. Medium to full bodied with complex flavors. Figs, vanilla, caramel, milk chocolate, vinous sweet raisins, earth, licorice root, nuts and sweet candy. Well worth the storage.
