Sampled at Rock Bottom Warrenville’s Popfest and showed a hazy red/brown color, with a fair amount of off white head foam and lacing for a fest glass. The nose was light toast, fruitiness, caramel, a touch of vanilla, and some assertive but smooth barrel character. Medium+ body and softly carbonated, the flavor was similar notes, with decent malt content, medium hop bitterness, and again stressing the smooth woodiness & mellow whiskey notes. Any alcohol warmth was superceded by the stifling weather, but it’s presence was noticed. Paired nicely with Coconut Cloud Nine, gourmet popcorn.

Tap. Pours lightly hazy amber with a medium, fizzy off-white head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (toast, caramel, cookie), heavy hops (pine, floral), and average esters (apple/pear) with notes of oak, bourbon, and dates. Flavor is heavy malt, lightly tart/sour meal, bourbon, oak, and moderate hops. Full body, medium warmth and carbonation with a dry finish.

Draft at RBC, June 3. Don’t know if it’s the same barrel as the previous two ratings, but I don’t have any info that says this wasn’t done before. Cloudy brownish red in my taster. Nice malty smell with, alcohol, oak,and a trace of dried cherry. Taste shows a bit a harsh hop bitterness, which I thought was Northern Brewer, but I see dry hopping in the description. Taste has some bourbon notes, but is still pretty bright in hops. Not thick like some impys, but it still goes down just fine for a hoppy beer.

Tap at rb. Pours murky reddish brown, with small white head. Aroma of big ourbon, pine hops, caramelized sugar and slight vanilla. Big hippy bourbony flavor. Some raisin and fig. Intense, yet quaffable. Interesting.

FunkyBrewster (1518) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - NOV 11, 2010
On tap at rb. Pours a deep amber brown with a small creamy white head. Aroma, um, super bourbon vanilla touches, a bit oaky, some coconut and almond. Flavor starts very sweet and woody. Some caramel and toffee become apparent before the vanilla and oaky notes finish out. medium lightly creamy body and a softer carbonation.’s bourbon barrel something. The amber doesn’t come through much but dammit if I like bourbon.........I do.

CaptainCougar (7133) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - JUN 17, 2009
On tap at the Great Taste of the Midwest (8/9/08) as Clare’s Commando: Pours a transparent dark copper with a thin-lacing off-white head. Aroma of fresh grapefruity hops and decent bourbon oaky balance. Body starts with good fullness, sweet caramel and fresh grapefruity bittering and flavor hops along with a touch of bourbon before a drier bittersweet finish. Nicely balanced and enjoyable.

DLD ’08. Cask. This definitely didn’t sem to be that big of a beer, but it definitely was interesting. Nice balance of hops and malt, not overly caramel like most reds that I’ve had. Minimal bourbon in the nose, mostly a soft floral character, taste is much the same. Nice and pleasant. Drinkable.

dm9831 (1512) - Monee, Illinois, USA - NOV 18, 2008
FoBAB 2008: hazy mahogany color, nice white head with lacing. nose of bourbon with floral notes. flavors of creamy caramel, vanilla, wood and bourbon. medium bodied, dry finish. interesting.

GTMW 08 - Pours copper / orange with an off-white head. The aroma has vanilla, bourbon and nothing else that I can detect. Medium body. The taste is about like the aroma. Not really anything to expand on here ~ very one dimensional and over bourboned. I don’t like bourbon, therefore I don’t like this ’beer’.
