Draft on tap at Belgian Fest (Chicago, IL). Pours a richer golden hue, firm haze, some orange glow. Frothy offwhite head atop dies to a thicker ring, laces ok. Aromas are dryness, straw, gentle dough and a kick of hops preaching lemons, florals, and more dough. Gentle spice, more lemon, citrus. Initial is a bit sweet up front, touches of apple and pear, gentle citrus. Some dough, fairly clean and lighter bodied as we get in, preaching a firm hoppy bitterness. Lemons, florals, touches of grass. Gentle spice, yeast. Some dryness grows in the fold. Gentle dough and fruit sweetness in the middle, some melon and gentle citrus at times. Backend gives a more firm bitterness, dryness with florals, citrus, grass and earthy hops. Jabs of melon, some grapefruit. Gentle apple, pear. Odd, but enjoyable. Hops win it back for me, but still has a firm Belgian yeast influence. NobleSquirrel (3438) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - SEP 4, 2012
Draft at RBC. Pours a deep gold, well-hazed with a fluffy white head. The nose has a vanilla ester, standard RB Belgian strain. Apricot and citrus, peaches and cream. Fruity hops, malt is in hiding. The yeast is pretty strong, white pepper. On tasting, light caramel, peppery with fruity yeast, faint vanilla and bubblegum. Fruity hops represent but yeast is pretty strong overall. Still, solid Belgian IPA, lacks the harshness overall that I’ve seen from a lot of hop forward Chicago beers.
