On tap at RB Chicago. I’m a fan of dry stouts, but I wasn’t a huge fan of this one. It seemed to be an attempt to make Guiness (i.e., something that the hoi polloi would recognize and enjoy), but didn’t really even get there. Doesn’t have Guinness’ creamy head, for starters. It smelled nicely roasty (with a touch of vanilla sweetness), but it also smelled thin. This was paralleled in the mouth, where it was light and fizzy and not nearly dry enough. The finish was Guinness-light: a spacious wateriness and a clean hop bitterness that’s refreshing and sessionable. Still, without Guinness’ initial creaminess, it lacks the counterpoint to make it interesting. These are all quibbles, as it’s quite drinkable and doesn’t have anything that stands out as bad. Just unambitious.

draft at RB Chicago...close to black pour with brown edges and a thin light brown head... roasted malt and chocolatey. more roast than hops is what i get out of it... flavors of dry roasted malt with a slightly bitter finish. mild carbonation and medium mouthfeel

Draft at the brewpub. They must have taken into considerations the ratings and suggestions other raters have given becaus I thought it better than most people did last year. It was on CO2, poured black with a nice tan head. Big and bold in flavor, a touch acrid and quite roasty and bitterly hoppy. Pretty nice stuff, no chocolate at all but tons of roast. Nice.

Guinness-like in appearance and flavor with just a bit more roastiness. I guess that’s a compliment tastes like light milk-chocolate water.

I thought this was a decent dry stout. Pours black with a tan head. Easy to drink, smooth and creamy stout. It has a little bit of coffee and maybe some chocolate in there also. A little thin, but I thought it was a decent brew.

Loose, bubbly tan head. Pitch black and opaque. Mild balanced roast aroma. Bourbony, slightly roasty, dry. Thin and watery. Neutered.

Nitro-pull at the brewpub: The body’s a dark enough brown to look black under all but the brightest light. The nitro infused tan head is smooth and creamy, off course. The aroma is full of roasted barley blended with scents of coffee, charred nuts, and a hit of hoppy bitterness. Almost too smooth and creamy in the mouth. Some bittersweet chocolate is added to the flavor and the hopped up bitterness intensifies as you drink. Dry finish. Pretty decent.

On tap at Goose Island Stoutfest. Poured a very deep brown with a short beige head. Almost burnt coffee malt and dry lighter chocolate in the nose. Bitterness was rather high in the flavor, with a medium coffee presence, coffee, and dark spices (anise).. roast was moderate. Light-medium bodied with a dry finish. Certainly tasty, but not exciting or exceptional in any regard.
