3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft taster at RB Chicago. Body is clear and bright like the tripels I have known in my lifetime. The smell has mostly candi sugar, but not overly sweet. Taste is also slightly sweetened malt. A hint of grains of paradise. And some autolyzed yeast. I’m not digging this as much as i thought I would, but maybe I have greater than normal expectations for this style.
Draft at RBC. Pours a faintly hazed deep gold with a moussey white head. Nose is super fruity, banana and a hop note. Light tart note as well. Minimal malt overall. On tasting, quite peppery phenols with a tartness and banana persisting. Pretty rounded. Quite high bitterness detracts somewhat overall as it pulls the sweetness out and washes it somewhat. Not too bad, the yeas character works but could use less bitterness. Pawola22 (3262) - Woodridge, Illinois, USA - JAN 25, 2012
On tap at the brewpub. Pours a clear, golden-orange colored body with a finger-width, frothy, white head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is bigger banana and a moderate pepper with a good amount of band-aid. There is some sweet honey to the malts with a light, bready caramel and a touch of clove spice. Flavor is better and without the bigger band-aid. Starts with some sweeter fruits consisting of apricots and banana before the honey sweetened, slightly bready caramel and toffees offer a pleasant, full body and sweet malt backing. A solid earthy hopping comes in and helps this dry with a moderate bitterness that has some clove spice, banana, a touch of toast, a light alcohol warmth, and some pepper. Lengthy aftertaste following a slightly sticky, full body and a moderate carbonation. Overall, an alright trippel. It is a bit sweet throughout and the alcohol/spicy yeast clashes a tad. This has some flaws, but it wasn’t terrible. Ughsmash (7502) - Pewaukee, Wisconsin, USA - FEB 7, 2011
On tap at Rock Bottom Chicago. Poured hazy paler golden with very little going on.. looked dead. The aroma was strong and sweet with banana and honey leading.. some peppery accents.. came across as unnecessarily strong. The flavor was very sweet again with banana, medium-skinned fruits, and honey at the core.. peppery alcohol around.. heavy-handed and sweet. Syrupy and slower-moving through the palate.. the sweetness and alcohol were both overwhelming, and managed to clash with each other.. sticky on the finish. I didn’t much like this.
