Draft on tap at the brewpub (Chicago, IL). My first adventure to RB:Chi in a long while. Pours a nice deep dark copper ruby hue, a touch of haze, some lighter copper bottom and edges with a ring of creamy offwhite head that laces ok, more of a frothy head. Aromas are rich candied fruits and toffee, caramel, a touch of vanilla, with red fruit, nuts, and fruit cake. Some brown sugar and cake. Initial is fuller medium bodied, some dulled out caramel, toffee, and a touch of bakers chocolate. Fruitiness isn’t as heavy as in the nose, some bitterness and heat on the backend with dried cherries, candied fruit, and some brown sugar essence in between. Not nearly as sweet as the nose led on, a full bodied lager with a malty kick up front that dries out, some ok bittering hops, touch of spice, and gives some ABV-heat on the backend. Not bad, much better.. Or maybe even keeled is a better descriptor.. Than the nose let on Ughsmash (7508) - Pewaukee, Wisconsin, USA - FEB 7, 2011
On tap at Rock Bottom Chicago. Poured hazy medium-dark brown with a light beige head. The aroma picked up sweet caramel and molasses sweetness with some peppery accents.. a little raw with the boozage.. sweet, but more aggressive than it should’ve been. The flavor found heavy, syrupy molasses and dark chocolate maltage at the core.. peppery alcohol and some earthy bitterness around.. raw at times with only OK balance. Medium-bodied with lower carbonation on the palate.. lots of sugars.. forgettable.
