tap at rockfest... pours a murky dark caramel brown with a light beige head... assertive barrel with vanilla and bourbon accents and sour finish... again, heavy barrel flavors with a bit of sourness in the finish.. overbarreled but i still kind of enjoyed this one. Mug club mug served on tap at the brewpub (Orland Park, IL). Pours a nice brownish pour, hazed, with red edges and big brown head that starts to die and laces and remains fairly large. Aromas are typical, pushing malty toffee and caramel, light nut and biscuits, with just a touch of a floral hop. Initial is creamy, yet light bodied, pushing some toffee, vanilla, caramel, and lighter tobacco and nut qualities. Decent floral bitterness balances the sweet malt on the backend. This is considerably better than the 80 shilling of a couple months ago, preaching some defining flavors that are sustainable yet light and sessionable at a moderate 6.2 percent. Finishes with decent toast and toffee and light bitterness. Nothing palate breaking, but certainly enjoyable. drewbeerme (3920) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JUN 9, 2008

Poured a hazy mahogany under a large, foamy ecru head which falls slow and laces thick. Aroma found a boatload of caramel above a grainy base with additional mild florals and herbs. Mid-bodied with a flavor of chocolates and caramels, a touch of chalkiness and a bitterness in the finish.

This was my favorite at the new Rock bottom. The body’s a reddish chestnut in color and it’s capped with a small short-lived head. It smells of old caramel, a bit of toffee, a squirt of butterscotch, and a woody like bitterness. Light roasted malt and subdued juicy fruit are blended into the flavor. The finish was rather abrupt. Overall, a decent, warming ale.
