April 16th, 2011 - The Rock Bottom Sour Red was the very special and very temporary beer of the day when we made the trip to the restaurant for a good, greasy dinner. It’s a foxy red color with a lot of cloudiness and sediment, and on pouring into the glass a sharp sour smell brackets the nostrils. It’s poignant, but not harsh, refined with a thin aroma of oak, orange and tangerine, and a light smell of fresh construction of freshly cut wood. The flavor is sour too, but never astringent, showing off some of the oak, but not the fruits found in the aroma - at least, not until the mid-taste where some milder, less sharp notes of wood reappear, as well as the slightest squeeze of tangerine juice. I’d venture to say that this special beer, although done in small batches, is some of the finest brewing work I’ve seen come out of Rock Bottom South Denver.
