Solid black, with bright brown highlights at the edges. A thin creamy head that suggests oats in the grist. Caramel toast malts in the nose, but I can’t get much hop in edgewise. Has roastiness in the palate, but more like a porter. Hops tend to stick to their bitter business until some pine wanders around. Still, rather palatable for a high-BU beer. Pine hops get bigger further down.
On tap at the Yorktown brewpub, displaying an almost opague brown color, with some ruby highlighting showing through, frothy, brownish tan head foam, and ribbons & spots of lacing. The aroma was roastiness, coffee, resin, and citrus following up. The body was light to medium, and with only a softly carbonated presentation, came off a little thin & watery. Hop bitterness and astringency were moderate and fairly lingering. Except for the initial aroma introduction, not altogether expressive, but basically okay in the drinkability department.
