Taster at RBY. Dark malts offer an almost heady smell for a session beer, with a slight note of vanilla somewhere in the mix. The taste has some of the sting of bitter roast malts that isn’t usually found with dark lagers. But a decently hoppy taste means all is forgiven. Bubbly, too, to keep it on the good side. A clean lager finish helps out, too. tmoreau (4424) - Lombard, Illinois, USA - JUL 27, 2012
On tap with a 10 oz. footed glass as my vehicle, served to me during the Grampfenpils Tapping at RB Yorktown. The color was ruby highlighted, darkest brown, with silky, cream/light tan head foam that slowly reduced to a ring & film, and left some clingy spray of lacing on the glass. The aroma was roasty, coffee, dry cocoa, a little nuttiness, with a touch of char. The flavor added to these notes, medium hop bitterness with some lingering character, no discernible sweetness, but a pleasantly dry finish. More Schwarz than Dunkel. Light to medium bodied, crisp, and very drinkable! A big fan of this style lager! TheAlum (7164) - Aurora, Illinois, USA - JUL 26, 2012
Mug club draft on tap at the brewpub (Lombard, IL). Pours a richer deep blackish brown pour, a gentle haze, just really dark overall with more mahogany dark brown edges and bottom that shows touches of light. A cakey tannish light brown head atop stays as a firm layer, laces ok as it cakes and sticks around. Pretty and dark. Aromas are deeper cocoa and toasty biscuits, sticky sweet toffee, breads, and biscuits. More cocoa, kiss of anise, faint dark fruit. A cocoa with a sweet and dry battling slant seems the dominant factor, a touch creamy with bakers cocoa and biscuits, gentle earthy hopping. Biscuits, toffee. Initial is lighter end of medium bodied, providing some girth to this darker lager but still quite drinkable. Toffee and cocoa hit up front. Biscuits, toast, and toffee, gentle sweetness offers biscuits, touches of milk chocolate, malted milk balls, and a kiss of anise. Husky roasted grains are mellow but grow slowly on the palate. A pretty solid dark lager, smooth with firm yet not overbearing flavors, a touch of body yet still quite drinkable. A touch nutty, earthy, cocoa, biscuits. Good flavors. I actually quite enjoy this one.
