COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
One time, in the smoke of a campfire, a friend shot up from his slumber proclaiming, "No Dr. Gibbler, No! I kid you not!" Everytime I think of smoke, I think of the mysterious Dr. Gibbler. This Rauchbier, or Smoked Helles, is light in color, but absolutely filled with flavors. Smokey essences are at the forefront, whilst sweet malts fill in the background. A stateside rarity and summer favorite.

Draft sampler at the Solemn Oats tapping. Just a few breif notes of approval. Hews closely to a Schekerla style smokes helles. Actually, the German version tends toward the bacony side, but this has the character of a smoked Gouda rind. Base style was some room to play.

Draft on tap at the brewpub (Lombard, IL). Pours a rich lively golden hue, a faint haze but near transparent hue. Lively carbonation and bigger whitish cakey head sits atop. Stays as a firm layer, laces ok. A striking firm golden orange glow and hue overall. Aromas are medium smoke, dry ashy wood and campfire meats, gentle cherry, hotdogs, ham. Ashy, touches of sweet mellow grainy and bready malts. Initial is lighter bodied preaching gentle bready malts, grains, and some fruity apple essence. Moves quickly into smoked malts, touches of smoked apple, campfire meats, ham, and hotdogs. Some gentle ashy wood, touches of toast, mellow fruit really stick into the backend. Especially smoked apple presence. A touch of tartness and smoke mix. Pleasant and drinkable (though for a smokehead it’s a touch light, but it works well), the mellow malt body allows it to preach a smoke and fruity synergy. Overall, a solid interesting drinker from a local brewer. Recommend.

Attended the initial tapping at Yorktown, and was Mug Club served. Wiped the haziness from the glass to show good clarity in the light golden color, silky, white froth to the head, and wavey rings of lacing. The aroma was smoked sausage on the grill, light grain, and smooth malt. Light to medium in body, the flavor was a combination of some tartness, medium hop bitterness, and lively carbonation, resulting in a nice, sessionable crispness. Very nice!
