Bottle. The pour was a very dark brown with an average sized (1-2 finger) light brown creamy head that dissipated to a thin film, which in turn created some very good sheets of lace.
The aroma was of a roasted dark bread malt, a light resin hop and a sweet leathery yeast with notes of chocolate, coffee, molasses and toffee.
The taste was nice and smooth and rather malty with notes of some dark chocolate and molasses from the onset and slowly transformed into a mild bitter-sweet mocha coffee flavor with just a hint of toffee towards the end and a mild alcohol feel that just grabs you at the back of the throat. The flavor lingered for a long while with the mocha coffee taste only being outdone by the alcohol warming sensation at the finish.
Mouthfeel was a just a shade or two below medium in body with a slight watery texture and a medium carbonation.
Overall a very robust and roasty brew with a bold fulfilling taste. A rock solid example of the style.
(draft 3/9/11). Dark brown color. Medium tan head. Moderate roasted malt aroma with light caramel and chocolate. Flavor of the same, with light burnt character. Avg duration. Slick texture. Moderate carbonation. Fair lacing. cubs (10740) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - APR 9, 2011
Bottle @ home. Thick, dark brown appearance with a creamy tan head. Toasted dark malts, espresso, a touch nutty, and mild chocolate aroma. Creamy, velvety mouth feel. Chocolate, toasty chocolate malty, lightly milky flavor. Milk chocolate, toasty malty finish and aftertaste. Nice one Double A!
