Appearance - pours black, with a creamy, foamy, hazel head. Very inviting. Aroma - upon opening the bottle the beautiful smell of smoky bacon immediately put a smile on my face (and Im a vegetarian, go figure!). After the pour the other aromas came out really nicely. There was definitely coffee there. And Im not talking simply coffee-coffee. Oh no, Im talking super-freshly ground mocha coffee beans, absolutely gorgeous. There was another wine-y, earhty, woody-quality there that almost made me think of an aged tawny port. Even before taking a sip I found myself moaning (in a good way!). Taste - I was super-pleased that the smokiness in the nose translated to a beautiful woody tobacco in the mouth (rather than tasting of ashtray). The roast of the malts return as the freshly ground mocha coffee beans are in the mouth as well as they are in the nose. The tawny port quality gives it just that extra little bit of special, and best of all: it wasnt syrupy or overly sweet at all, and actually has a really nice hoppy bitterness to it. Palate - not watery at all, and neither was it syrupy or too fizzy. Had a really nice, almost velvety texture. Overall - my favorite porter to date. Even barrel-aged porters or imperial porters havent been able to hold a candle to this one as of yet. Not too sweet. Freshly ground mocha beans, tawny port and woodsy tobacco. Wonderful. I found it an absolute blast of a rollercoaster of evolving flavors. And it was so well balanced I found myself enjoying picking out the flavors one by one simply by attending to them rather than having to go out and forcibly search for them. Gorgeous beer. Again, my favorite porter.

UPDATED: JAN 24, 2017 Zwart als de nacht. Compacte crmekleurige schuimkraag. Behoorlijk wat carbonatie. Rokerig aroma. Smaken van chocolade, rook, leer, toast, mout, koffie. Licht bitter-zoete afdronk. Zeer goed over heel de lijn. Misschien iets te veel koolzuur maar dat is dan ook het enige (kleine) minpuntje.

Grumbo (2429) - Ipswich, Suffolk, ENGLAND - SEP 17, 2016
Bottle from www.slijterijhetfust.nl and split at the EU themed 2nd Ipswich bottle share. Pours almost black with a light tan head. Aroma of light roasted malt, chocolate, fruit/berries and with alcohol quite prominent. Medium sweetness and bitterness. Body towards full, oily texture, soft carbonation. Alcohol remained a little too forward throughout though.

Zlotta (2872) - Hagen / Bonn, GERMANY - AUG 23, 2016
0.33 l bottle from Gall & Gall (Zutphen), best before December 2016 (so probably almost two years old). Pitch black with a thin, frothy, slowly diminishing, beige head. Sweetish-malty, quite smoky, fruity and a bit roasty aroma of dark chocolate, peat, ash, dark ripe fruits and hints of iodine. Sweetish-malty, quite smoky, fruity and a bit roasty taste of dark chocolate, peat, ash, tar, some iodine and quite a bit of dark ripe fruits, followed by a medium long, moderately roasty-bitter, rather peaty-smoky finish. Medium body, minimally effervescent mouthfeel, very soft carbonation. Good beer, quite complex and very intense, still very well-balanced.
