UPDATED: APR 30, 2013 Dark opaque brown almost black with an orange tint and a frothy, brown, disappearing, non-lacy head. Deep smell of roasted malt and smoke, chocolate with butter and sweet dark caramel and toffee. Dark fruits – cherry, plum, prune. Full oily body. Sweet initial taste of caramel and milk chocolate, lots of roast ash and dark chocolate in the middle with a liquorish, fruity finish. From sweet to burnt bitter to sweet again in one sip. It would be amazing with a chocolate mousse. An excellent porter. Deep and delicious. lachneger (394) - NETHERLANDS - NOV 20, 2013

Appearance - pours black, with a creamy, foamy, hazel head. Very inviting.
Aroma - upon opening the bottle the beautiful smell of smoky bacon immediately put a smile on my face (and I’m a vegetarian, go figure!). After the pour the other aromas came out really nicely. There was definitely coffee there. And I’m not talking simply coffee-coffee. Oh no, I’m talking super-freshly ground mocha coffee beans, absolutely gorgeous. There was another wine-y, earhty, woody-quality there that almost made me think of an aged tawny port. Even before taking a sip I found myself moaning (in a good way!).
Taste - I was super-pleased that the smokiness in the nose translated to a beautiful woody tobacco in the mouth (rather than tasting of ashtray). The roast of the malts return as the freshly ground mocha coffee beans are in the mouth as well as they are in the nose. The tawny port quality gives it just that extra little bit of special, and best of all: it wasn’t syrupy or overly sweet at all, and actually has a really nice hoppy bitterness to it.
Palate - not watery at all, and neither was it syrupy or too fizzy. Had a really nice, almost velvety texture.
Overall - my favorite porter to date. Even barrel-aged porters or imperial porters haven’t been able to hold a candle to this one as of yet. Not too sweet. Freshly ground mocha beans, tawny port and woodsy tobacco. Wonderful. I found it an absolute blast of a rollercoaster of evolving flavors. And it was so well balanced I found myself enjoying picking out the flavors one by one simply by attending to them rather than having to go out and forcibly ’search’ for them. Gorgeous beer. Again, my favorite porter. drmet (964) - Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, GERMANY - MAY 1, 2017

A great one.Doesn’t have to hide behind the great Baltic Porter’s or Imperial Stouts kiwianer (3428) - Otorohanga, NEW ZEALAND - JUN 4, 2012
The head is ok, the body black. It smells sweet. The taste is roasty-sweet, creamy, roasty-bitter. In the aftertaste it is very roasty, very intensiv, chocolate-alcoholic. Very good! I love that one ! 11/13/12/12/10/13 uckelman (799) - Durham, ENGLAND - SEP 15, 2012
Opaque dark brown. Huge tan head. Dark chocolate and malt in aroma. Lots of carbonation. Cantabrian (1130) - Christchurch, NEW ZEALAND - AUG 7, 2016
This was a while ago, a bottle from a lovely bottle store in the city centre at Nijmegen. Great service there. I recall drinking a superb beer. Black as the name, with a shaggy russet heat, just like a fruit bat. Lovely aroma of peat, dark berries, cocoa, vanilla, repeating on the flavour, with a nice touch of salty liquorice. It was somewhat oily, but incredibly easy to drink. Much superior to its midnight/imperial sister.
