This tasty creation is a hybrid beer, mixing the best of both Belgian and English ingredients. Using 2-row with three Belgian specialty malts and Belgian Candi Syrup gives this beer its smooth malty flavor. We then use English hops to give this beer its great aroma, and finally we use a mildly malty and slightly fruity English style yeast strand to finish it off. Rogers The Hound Dog Scotch Ale clocks in at 6.6% ABV.

Growler from the Malt Market. I don’t know what to think of this. It *looks* like a scotch ale, red-tinged clear with a decent head. But my first reaction to the taste is...grapefruity hops. Certainly not any English hops I’m used to, and it doesn’t taste like English ale yeast. More like an offbeat pale ale or IPA. Not bad, but not to style. I honestly wonder whether this was a screw up on the part of the pourer (although again, it looks the part).

Taster at BOTW. Dark brown. Big malty nose, chocolate fudge, caramel, raisins. Rich, sweet flavor, very meaty and cake-like. A well done Scotch ale, big and juicy.

Bottle. Medium reddish pour with a slight but creamy tan head. Aroma was faintly malty with vanilla and caramel. Flavor was lightly of smoky malt, vanilla with caramel and very faint molasses accents. A bit of a grainy note. Medium bodied. Alcohol hidden pretty well. Slight bitterness at the end.

Bottle @ home, courtesy of BroIPA. Thanks! Pours a touch hazy brunt orange appearance with a frothy tan head. Light veggie, burnt sugar, bready yeasty, light toffee aroma. Somewhat fruity, chewy, bready, herbal, caramel, light chocolate, mild veggie flavor. Kind of all over the place before you even consider the veggie notes and you are left with a less than enjoyable product.

I found the nose on this was mostly where the Belgian sweetness showed itself and the flavor was where its English style revealed itself. The palate was medium to full in the front, what you’d expect from a Scotch ale, but it was light and a bit watery in the finish. I got no bitterness. A very drinkable beer, doesn’t exhaust the palate, nor is the alcohol overwhelming. I wish the nose on mine was a bit more revealing.
