Beard beer is brewed with a yeast created from Brewmaster John Maier’s beard. No need to freak out, brewers have used wild yeasts in beer making for centuries. John has had the same old growth beard since 1978 and for over 15,000 brews, so it is no great surprise that a natural yeast ideal for brewing was discovered in his beard. What does beard beer taste like? try it, we think you’ll be surprised...

Bottle bbe Jan 2016. Colour gold, clear, very strong head. Aroma metallic, grainy. Taste sweet grains, fruity, light herbal bitterness. Finishes sweet. Mouthfeel thin. Belgian golden ale, perhaps? ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

650mL bottle from Dan Murphys BB 30/06/16 Orange gold body, white head holds. Moderate intensity aroma - grain malts, bready yeast, sorta spicy in a odd phenolic way. Medium bodied, drying texture, moderate carbonation. Grainy malts continue on the body, it’s somewhat bolstered by a bready, spicy, almost clove & pepper phenolic yeast spice. Bitterness reasonably low, as is hop character. Interesting experiment, end result is nothing special - was hoping for something more funky!

Fľaša. Zlatá farba, biela pena. Vôňa sladová, sladká, trávová. V chuti stredne plné telo. Chuť sladká, jemne ovocná, pikantná. Dlhšia sladko-horká dochuť.

0,65l bottle from Susan’s Fine Wine & Spirits, Santa Fe, NM. Pours cloudy amber with a medium head. Aroma is sweet malts with something that resembles a belge yeast. Flavor is sweet malts with tarty notes. Interesting yeast. Resembles a belgian ale, a saison and a sour ale. Better than I expected.

Beerhammaren (1793) - Jyväskylä, FINLAND - NOV 20, 2015

Draft. A- Honey, slightly sweet, subtle fruits, wheat. A- Light amber color, hazy liquid, minimal white head. T- Slightly sweet, malty, boring. P- Light body, average texture, average carbonation, smooth finish. O- Glad I finally tried this one if for no other reason that I think it’s more of a novelty. Some honey on the nose and palate along with some tea or subtle floral notes. Otherwise not overly exciting but very drinkable.

swampwater (66) - Preston, Lancashire, ENGLAND - NOV 11, 2015
Aroma: Hops, flowers, mango.
Appearance: Deep amber, with a light, white head.
Taste: Hops, mango, pineapple, and a very slight hint of coffee.
Palate: Bitter at first, with a lingering sweet finish. Medium body. Medium carbonation.
Overall: I bought this beer for the gimmick, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that this is a great beer. Interesting aromas, and clean, refreshing flavours make this quite a complex beer.
