COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Please note: Black Brutal is not the same beer as Black Brutal Bitter, which is an alias for Skullsplitter.

JLS Release #23: Black Brutal 2007 John Maier has brewed a dark verison of Brutal Bitter for a second time, with some degree of variation from the first Black Brutal recipe (aka, SkullSplitter). Black Brutal 2007 is mahogany in color with a smooth roasted malt flavor and agressive bitterness. Unfiltered ~ Unfined ~ Uncompromised... Prost! Black Brutal 07 is brewed with Great Western 2-row and Munich; Weyermann Carafoam Special, Carawheat, and Melanoidin malts, along with Summit, Simcoe and Amarillo hops in the boil, and more Amarillo in the hopback; plus free range coastal waters, and top fermenting Pacman yeast. Black Brutal 07 measures in at 15.1 Plato OG, 4.2 Plato FG, and approx 60 IBUs.

Draft @ Friscos. Pours a dark, slightly hazy caramel brown color; lightest tan head with solid retention and fine-bubbled lacing that lasts forever. Somewhat bready, soft wet malts in aroma; almost like fresh-baked bread. Medium-to-full, chewy mouthfeel: relaxed carbonation, roasted malts, caramel, and dried fruits; a touch of warming alcohol and sharp citrus coming through. Generous, bready / malty beer. Lengthy, soft finish: wet malts, bread, and chewy caramel in the finish.

On tap, Coles, Buffalo. Milt hop, malt aroma. Neat murky dark brown, pretty fair sized dark white head. Huge bitter taste, very very dry. Slight hints of chocolate and burnt malt, but cmon, this one is all about the hops, and they are aggressive. I liked it, but it is kind of joke calling it a Schwarzbier, isnt it? Hop monster.

On tap at 1702 during Rogue night - Pours a dark brown color with a small tan head. Light lacing. Aroma is roasted malt and coffee. Flavor is a bitter roasted malt. Palate is left bitter and a tad dry. Seems a little thin. A decent beer.

beerinmarch (2830) - Washington, USA - OCT 16, 2007
This release wasnt a whole lot different then the previous in my opion. A bit less sharp bitterness and less excess alcohol in the finish, but that could just be due to having it a few months after the initial release. Pours brown with a soft beige head. Roasty malts with a bitter citrus/pine finish.

iowaherkeye (2703) - Ocean Beach, San Diego, California, USA - MAR 30, 2007
On tap @ The Sanctuary. Served a clear very dark brown with a one finger beige head that faded to a film before very long. Aroma of citrus and spicy hops, some caramel and toasty malts. Flavor was big bitterness and scorched caramel malts, and a dry bitter (7 out of 10) finish. Some grassiness was noted after a while. Low to moderate carbonation and a medium body. Ive not had many Schwarzbiers, but I dont think this is one.

Sample @ Papago Brewing, Scottsdale, AZ. Toffee and mild sweet roast aroma. Black body with tan head and decent lacing. Light roasted flavor along with somewhat sweet malt candy present. Body texture was thicker than others of this style and interesting sample.

On draft at Capones. Pours a burgundy black with a small white head. Aroma of malts, dark fruit and citrus. Taste of dark fruit, roasted malt, cola and citrus. Has a tangy aftertaste.

redlight (2318) - Orlando, Florida, USA - MAY 15, 2007
on draft @ redlight redlight. Piney, resin aroma, hints of roasted malts. Pours very dark brown, with reddish hints on the outside and a think tan head. Citrus hops up front with a sweet flavor, notes of tar, burnt coffee, crisp hoppy finish. This beer is very smooth on the palate. Easily enjoyable. (this is my 2nd year trying this beer, much better than last)

illinismitty (2271) - Nashville, Tennessee, USA - MAR 14, 2007
Draft at Barleys in Knoxville, which I purchased for the tasting. I was pretty excited to try this. Pours black with a tan head and decent lacing. Carbonation is a tad aggressive. Aroma of cat wizz, caramel, and some orange. Flavor or medium dark roast and tea offset by some citrus hops. Finish has a rather unpleasant bitter tea like finish. This was not a very good beer, and a waste of $2.75.

Brown-black with a very creamy brown head. Strong aroma of hops and to a lesser extent roasty malt. Taste is extremely bitter, as the name (which I did not know at the time of tasting) now suggests. It’s like a black IIPA with an underlying sweetness that borders on cloying. $6.5/pint
