4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draught at Capital Ale House in Innsbrook. Appears a dark cloudy reddish brown with a small off-white head. Aroma is rich and sweet and malty with a floral, citrusy hop nose. Some mild fruitiness and dark dried fruit also comes through in the aroma. Flavor is malty sweet upfront: caramel and toffee. Raison and plum ester notes follow along with a big citrusy, piney, and spicy hop profile. Interesting mix of tangerine American amarillo and spicy Noble Sterling hops. Alcohol warmth in the slightly dry finish. Body is very full and smooth with a moderate carbonation level fitting in this style.
Poured up on tap at Flanny’s where it exhibits a deep copper brown body that supports a light tan head of foam that leaves behind some nice sheet lacing. The aroma offers up some roasted malts, sweet malts, a faint dash of fruity esters, pine and then floral hops. The taste delivers a unique unexpected rauch malt sensation that comes and goes, could just be in my mind. It then runs quickly into sweet malts, some roasted malts and bitter pine hops. To midway the hops grow in intensity and pick up an herbal and floral hoppiness. Behind the sort of muddled malts and hops are wafer thin sweet ripe cherry like fruity esters. It’s a bit muddled but still fun to drink. northropfrye (3676) - Steinbach, Manitoba, CANADA - OCT 2, 2016
On tap at JL Beers, Grand Forks. Labelled as "Revolutionary Charlie". Dark auburn body, off white head, some lacing. Rich, malty, boozy, sweet. Some hops, barley wine notes. Nice. cards04 (2845) - Steinbach, Manitoba, CANADA - OCT 1, 2016
A really nice beer. I don’t get a lot on the aroma...some sweetness. Brown sugar maybe. Flavours are sweet and malty. A nice hoppy finish. Good stuff. douglas88 (9569) - Portland, Oregon, USA - JUN 24, 2016
On tap at the pib. Pours a cloudy orange color with a small white head. A light fruity caramel nose. The flavor is toffee, caramel, marmalade, heat. Ok. Yeasty. . raphael (1286) - Portland, Oregon, USA - APR 27, 2016
This one’s called Charlie’s Anniversary Ale. Deep brown, I smell resin, toffee and peaches. Flavors of alcohol, cherry, well-toasted whole wheat--gets a little edgy/harsh as I go on, burnt & bitter.

From notes: this beer is like an imperial amber. Same malt/hop balance, just more agressive on both sides, as is the abv. Not bad, not great. shigadeyo (3764) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - AUG 1, 2013

2/21/2011: Rogue Charlie 1981... Aroma: NONE! Appearance: Hazy, true amber color; frothy off-white head and dense lacing. Flavor: Slightly nutty with citrus/white grapefruit peel bitterness; sour twang in the middle; the strength is well-hidden. Palate: Body is medium-weight; cask-like mouthfeel, yet slick and oily/soapy. Overall: Decent flavor, but underwhelming (as expected); interestingly, this beer has nearly the same flavor profile as the NABC Beak’s Best, but is stronger and over-done and not as good even though this beer is bigger - I guess that proves that bigger is not always better!
Draught sample (8.5% ABV) at New Albanian Brewing Company in New Albany, IN. Rating #205 for this beer.
Draft at The Green Dragon in Portland, OR on 4 June 2013.
Pours a hazy copper with a thin off-white head. Strong aroma of malts and bitter hop notes. Big flavours; quite a lot of initial bitterness, more than I was expecting, but it turns to sweetness with the heavy malt and alcohol. bpreo (2902) - Eugene, Oregon, USA - JUN 14, 2013
Upwards of 10% alcohol. A very strong American Strong Ale. At the Brew Pub it comes in a goblet. Highly recommended. troopie (2408) - Munchen an der Willamette, Oregon, USA - MAY 27, 2013
This hits you right in the face. Strong in everything, malty aroma with hops fighting for attention. Malty flavour, as if saying, I’m an ale, not a lager. Finish falls off the table. Something doesn’t quite gel, but worth drinking
