COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dead Guy is a German-style Maibock made with Rogue’s proprietary "PacMan" ale yeast. It is deep honey in color with a malty aroma, rich hearty flavor and a well balanced finish. Dead Guy is created from Northwest Harrington, Klages, Maier Munich and Carastan malts, along with Perle and Saaz Hops.
In the early 1990s Dead Guy Ale was created as a private tap sticker to celebrate the Mayan Day of the Dead (November 1st, All Souls Day) for Casa U Betcha in Portland, Oregon. The Dead Guy design proved popular and was incorporated into a bottled product a few years later with MaierBock as the elixir.

   AROMA 8/10   APPEARANCE 4/5   TASTE 7/10   PALATE 3/5   OVERALL 13/20
KajII (800) - Macon, North Carolina, USA - AUG 15, 2009
UPDATED: DEC 14, 2011 Bottle. The pour was a mildly cloudy copper/amber with an orange hue and a small (less than 1 finger) off white frothy head that had decent retention and good lacing. The aroma was of toasted caramel malts, citrus hops and a biscuit yeast with strong citrus, toffee and caramel notes. The taste was sweetly bitter with a hint of caramel in the beginning then progressed into much bitterer flavor with a nice dose of citrus at the end, I am guessing a little lemon and grapefruit. The flavor stuck around long enough to let one enjoy the nice citrusy hoppy aftertaste. Mouthfeel had a smooth creamy texture and a medium body with a prickly carbonation. Overall a super refreshing ale that had a nice blending of malts, hops and citrus. And one that is most definitely worth drinking again.

Piwo raczej klarowne nalewa sie z dosc obfita drobnopechrzykowa piana. Dominuja nuty slodowo-melanoidowe z domieszka karmelu i kwiatowosci. Dosc wytrawne z wysyceniem i goryczka na srednioniskim poziomie. Bardzo mi smakowal.

Very decent ale. Dark and bitter. Nice mustiness, good balance between caramelly sweetness and dark citrus spice.

Sample at King Arthur in Ciampino-Italy. Copper dark pour with medium low foam. Aroma of ashes, very malty. Mouth is still malty and rough bitter. Not interesting to me.

On tap at Olut Sabadell. Bright copper coloured with white head. Malt aromas, lightly caramel and nuts. Spicy, not sweet and almost no bitterness. Highly carbonated.

geolgau (407) - Cluj-Napoca, ROMANIA - SEP 25, 2017
Caramel, scotch, alcohol spiciness, toasted bread. Sweet and malty, the alcohol burn is slightly felt on the tongue. Some grassy hops in the finish, but taste relies mostly on malty flavors. Good, nonetheless.

One of my favorites. Lots of character but very hard to put your finger on what it is. Very strong malt backbone with a long lingering Hoppy finish. A perfectly balanced brew. Also prominent notes of caramel and toffee and biscuit. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

DOC: 6/28/17

2015 BJCP Category: 4C Helles Bock

AROMA: Malt-forward nose with slight confectionery sweetness (especially caramel). Hints of toast. Faint hop presence in the background with herbal/peppery character. Clean fermentation. 10/12

APPEARANCE: Murky shade of orange/copper. A bit too dark (9-15 SRM) and off-color for the style. Small, off-white, foam mostly dissipates. 1/3

FLAVOR: Palette is sweet but not cloying. Caramel flavor is quite prominent with minor toast and Maillard characteristics. Very low hop presence in terms of both taste (herbal, peppery) and bitterness (slightly dry). Balance is malty, but not cloying. Flavors are a bit off for the style, but in the ballpark. Clean fermentation. 12/20

MOUTHFEEL: Medium body; medium-low carbonation. Smooth and comfortable with a slightly malty but ultimately clean aftertaste. Feels much lighter than 6.8% ABV. 3/5

OVERALL IMPRESSION: It's a Maibock done as an American Ale so it's not exactly to spec, but it's closer than not. 6/10

TOTAL SCORE: 32/50
