When I first cracked this bottle, I was surprised at what I smelled. The effervescence that I experienced had almost a root beer quality to it. The beer itself pours a dark, deep black; almost like a thinned out motor oil. The thin brown head is almost non existent. Just from looking at the beer, one would assume it’s much stronger than it really is because it pours quite similar to many of the imperial stouts out there (ie. The Abyss).
I still get quite a bit of that root beer pungency on first smell, but chocolate, coffee and graham crackers also show up. The taste is surprisingly crisp and clean (that’s the lager yeast for you) with loads of roast coming through on the front, and quite a bit of dark roasted coffee lingering on the back palate. They say on the bottle that they used some ultra crisp coastal water, and the cleanliness of this beer really showcases that.
While this isn’t as sweet as many schwarzbiers, I’m very much impressed by it. Good show, Rogue KolonelKlink (65) - AUSTRALIA - FEB 24, 2010
Very nice jet black colour with tan head. Earthy, chocolate and wood notes on the nose. Chocolate and roasted malt on the tongue, very well balanced. Really good beer! exparte (59) - Austin, Texas, USA - JUN 30, 2010
Whoa. I love Rogue so I picked this up without looking at it closely simply because I hadn’t seen it before. This is not at all what I was expecting from a "black lager" but I’m very pleasantly surprised. Aroma is heavy on the roasted malt and chocolate with a bit of smokiness. Pours deep black with a huge dark mocha head which was absolutely gorgeous for a few seconds. The head disappeared almost immediately and left no trace at all. It’s possible that my glass was to blame but it doesn’t feel like a lacer. Full bodied and smooth but very lightly carbonated. Smells, looks, and tastes big but isn’t at all and somehow that leaves me wanting, though it shouldn’t. Really a nice beer. JanosX (54) - - APR 4, 2015
Dark beer. Thick creamy head. Flavours of chocolate, coffee, cedar and smoke. Very smooth and easy drinking. maus10 (49) - Arkansas, USA - JUL 16, 2012
Wow, fantastic notes of coffee and smooth roared malts. Beautiful creamy and bubbly head that settles but doesn't disappear.

Bottle from Valu Mart "beer cave". Aroma of roast and chocolate. Poured inky black with a small dark tan head that dissapated quickly. Rich melanoidens with chocolate & roast, medium body and a long roasty finish. a wonderful black lager, American style.
