Dunkelbraunes Bier mit schöner Schaumkrone. Geruch nach Roggenmalz, röstig, Schokolade. Geschmack röstmalzig, Roggenmalz, Karamell, schokoladig, leicht würzig. Bulk_Carrier (6065) - Vermont, USA - MAR 23, 2014
Reviewed from notes.
The appearance was a brown colored body with a lighter hazier looking reddishness around the edges, two finger white foamy head that dies and leaves some foamy clingy lacing in its wake.
The smell had spicy rye, smokey, malty, fruity yeasty sort of hops, intricate in a way but different than other beers I’ve had in my life.
The taste is spicy yeasty flavoring that dominates but lets in the rye and the fruit combine and coming through in a smoky way, smoky yeasty aftertaste, slightly dry yet fruity and some light rye in the finish.
The palate is about a medium, sessionable - maybe. Carbonation is good to me.
Overall, I say good for the most part and worthy of more pours. swanmann (773) - Nompton, Oklahoma, USA - APR 27, 2014
From the bomber: it’s dark iced tea brown with pale, well-sustained foam. It smells sweet of cherry, toffee, caramel, almost wine-y. The flavor is nice and caramelly sweet, rich, with a nice rye bite. Full-flavored, medium mouthfeel, lightly creamy. Really a nice balance of sweet and medicinal characteristics of the grain.

22oz bottle. Medium brown color. Smells of peppery rye, smoked malts. Tastes of brown bread. Toasted dark malts, slight peppery tingle, smoke. Sticky on the lips. I nice mild rauch & bold rye. (3602) Beerdrinker79 (2188) - Idaho, USA - MAY 18, 2013
22 oz. bottle- Pours a clear dark ruby red with an off white two finger head and nice lace. Aroma is sweet, peat moss, some smoke, malt. The taste is again sweet, peat, more smoke than the aroma, but could always use more, rye bread, mellow and malty with a moderate dryness after the swallow, there is kind of a tangy taste that seems to be an off note. Body is medium and carbonation is medium. This is good, enjoyable, and smooth, I do wish it was smokier. dreamflower (790) - Steinbach, Manitoba, CANADA - JUN 1, 2013
Bottle shared with northropfrye. Lovely smokey aroma, if a little faint. Nice dark rouge colour. Tastes sweetly smokey and makes me want to eat bacon. I really like this.
(686-090613) JDBaker11058 (2206) - Maryland, USA - AUG 21, 2013
Appearance: deep clear amber with a silky, creamy, dense light tan head that stubbornly remains as a thick cap, almost with a cask ale or nitro pour look. Aroma: graham crackers, toffee, black pepper, hint of smoke, a barest whisper of wet cardboard. Taste: malty and sweet, slightly smoky/peppery as it warms (hello, rye!), caramel, tobacco, and a bit of almost English-feeling hops. Finish: smooth, slightly tangy, with a bit of sweet heat lasting. Notes: I love rye beers, and this one was no exception. Drank half the 22 oz bomber and used the other half to slow-cook some beef stew. Was not disappointed in the result.
