4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
On tap @Erzbierschofs. -- Black with huge dark persisting head. Aroma is of coffee, chocolate, malt, licorice. Taste is similar with a broad bitterness. Creamy, full bodied, heavy. Alcohol is surprisingly hidden but this great beer warms the heart.
From Apr 2007
This one pours from 750ml ceramic bottle(no date on bottle) an almost pitch black as I can see some slight reddish hues. The tannish head of foam is quite small and there's very little lacing.
The smell has a lot going on. I get a lot of chocolate, toffee, sweet caramel, coffee, and a pretty strong nose of the more than ample alcohol.
The taste is huge. Lots of chocolate and coffee with big notes of caramel hit my taste buds on my first sip. As I take further sips, I'm getting some dark fruit, plum and maybe some semi sweet cherry, but the complexity is really very tasty. The finish on it is a mix of bitterness from the coffee and a slight tartness from the dark fruit. Alcohol wise, I'm not getting a burn from it that I imagined I would judging from the smell but once it goes down, there *is* a slight warming in the stomach for me and man, is this one a thick rich brew when it comes to the body! But it's nice. Yep, this is very nice. I think I'll get another couple of bottles(here in Casper, US$11.99 each) and do a bit of aging to see how things go.
Well, I've finished the 1/2 a glass I had in my New Belgium Goblet and I'm going to put this baby away until tomorrow. "Resealing" the bottle was a bit of a chore but I'm happy that it was as it should keep the beer fine carbonation wise...heck, it's lightly carbonated to begin with, eh? ;^)
Bottom line: It's been a few years since I last had this Imperial Stout...I'm glad it showed up in town again as I think it is one fine sipping example of the style. Highly recommended!
PS: I see a few people reviewed the 750s and mentioned seeing a vintage year. It's not on mine. gripweed57 (2868) - Hamilton Square, New Jersey, USA - JUL 5, 2017
From old tasting notes. Brown/black color. Creamy tan head. Soft lactic roasted malt nose. Wow! Intense bittersweet roasted malt flavor. Notes of coffee, chocolate, licorice, smokiness and treacle. Very big and chewy. Lots of hop bitterness in finish to balance the intense malt flavor. Learninbeer (639) - Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA - APR 29, 2017
2007 Bottle. The aroma is sweet, caramel. coffee, chocolate, a little licorice, roasty. Pours almost black, with tan head mostly diminishing and excellent lacing. The taste is light bitter and a touch of sweet. The body is medium, the texture creamy, the carbonation lively and the finish long. Very Very Good!! ajnepple (7076) - Denver, Colorado, USA - JAN 26, 2017
7 oz bottle shared, purchased at Tops Liquors in Tempe. Aroma of chocolate malt, roasted grain, coffee, light earth and light fruity esters. Similar flavor, rich, smooth and complex, hiding the ABV pretty well. Medium to full body with a lingering finish. Nice. kaser (6382) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JAN 22, 2017
I will Re rate this. Having a 2002 and it is way too old. Chalk and bitter taste. Really just tastes super old.

12 oz bottle recieved from friend. Bottled date says 2004...its now 2017. This will be one of the oldest or longest aged beers I have had. Bottle also says best when aged one year. Poured into a narrow top stemmed glass. Very thin medium brown head dosnt last very long. Aroma consists primarily of dark malts. Taste is dense with heavy malts. Notes of chocolate and some coffees. A lot of hop character behind the malts. Full bodied beer with low carbonation. Low carbonation may likely be related to 12 years + aging. Over all a very strong and rich flavored beer. Has held up surprisingly well for over 12 years. I would have guessed it would have gone sour, 100% flat or stale by now. crim (423) - POLAND - OCT 9, 2016
Butelkowane w 2010 roku
W aromacie ciemne owoce, gorzka czekolada, kawa
W smaku srednie ciało, niska gorycz, długi posmak kawowy i ciemnych owoców wiśni
Shared 2012 swing-topped, 750 ml. bottle, viscously poured to a snifter showing a black/brown hue, with a bubbly layer of brownish tan head foam, and both foamy & leggy spots of lacing. The nose was heavily roasted, cocoa, caramel & treacle sweetness, and just a touch of age as soy. The taste added a pronounced, roasted, slightly resinous, and earthy bitterness that lingered, was full bodied, with soft carbonation, and pleasant, complementary warmth. Excellent. 2010 7oz Nip Bottle: Pour is murky brown with a modest khaki head into this glass - it retains on the average side , with very light spotting. The nose is rich dark fruit, and velvet cake - molasses and brow sugar. The nose is impressive. The flavor profile is faded with minerality, inherent alcohol, bittering notes, with char, cocoa powder - it’s just a plateau . Well - the bottle did say to wait a year to drink... not 6.... Bottle, vintage 2006, sampled February 6, 2016. Pitch black with beige head. Aroma of cocoa, chocolate, coffee, roasted malts. Sweet malty flavour with a malty, bitter finish.
