UPDATED: SEP 13, 2005 Nice warm black pour. Moderate amount of carmel brown head. Burned carmel and chicory aroma. Pleasantly mouthfilling with a somewhat astringent finish. Dark roast grain tastes up front, followed by a strange progression of tastes, very like dissolving a bit of dark Valrhona chocolate on your tongue. Very bitter, but then slowly resolving into something very fine.

Bottle. On its own, this is a very satisfying porter. Much sharper in taste than the Shakespeare Stout, with a very assertive body for a porter. Lots of rich chocolate and roasted flavours and the classic rogue hop taste in a dark brown body. Surprisingly I got very little coffee flavours or aroma out of this beer. My one big problem though, is that after having this, the chocolate stout, and the Shakespeare stout over the weekend, I find that they are all much too similar in taste to each other. The chocolate stands on its own, and the Shakespeare Ive rated before, so I suppose my disappointment is being reflected in the score for this. Good, but change it up a bit Rogue.

Coffee brown, with a tinge of red when held in the light. Way to bitter of an afterthought. Sweet teasing smell, but this one packs a mouthful. Very soft start with a harsh ending. Day-old-coffee-still-on-the-burner taste, with that awful lingering bitterness that i cant get rid of except to take another drink...and another. Big fan of the Porter, not a big fan of my first Rogue experience.

This is a deep, dark brown porter with a slender brown head. The aroma is of roast chocolate, coffee, and a whiff of anise. Thick, creamy mouthfeel. The flavor is of burnt coffee, bittersweet chocolate and cherry counterbalanced with an orange rind hoppy bitterness. Its got a dry finish with a coffee aftertaste. Interesting brew.

UPDATED: OCT 30, 2004 (22 oz bottle, $3.85) Im enjoying this solid, well-made porter, but its not quite blowing my socks off. Roasty, chocolate flavors abound in this moderately bitter and very hoppy porter. Its lightly sweet up front, with an assertive, bitter, roasty finish. One of the few porters where I can actually taste a strong hops component, which frankly, Im not all that fond of in a porter. Dry, medium body, leaning more toward the heavy side of medium, so this is not one of those chewy porters. The mild nose combines some light chocolate aromas with a bit of yeastiness. The color is very dark brown, almost black. Medium tan head rises to an average size on the pour, and shows pretty solid retention for a few minutes, but gradually is reduced to a thin ring. Just a smidgeon of lace is left on the glass. Theres a serious amount of sludge in the bottom of the bottle.

A wonderfully rich, heavily malted porter from the brewMASTERS at Rogue. A deep, dark brownish color with a tint of mahogany. A sweet, biting upfront flavoring with the obvious hints of coffee and blackcherries. The taste opens up to a more floral sweetness backed-up by a slight orange peel earthiness. Full finish. Great Beer!

Coffee and chocolate flavors. A little thin on the mouth feel for a Porter. Black-brown in color. Sweet aroma, but no noticeable coffee notes.

Bottle. Interesting porter...but wheres the mocha? I couldnt notice it, a little disappointed in that, but not in the beer overall

Bottle: Aroma obviously has coffee and chocolate but is rather hoppy to go along with it. That being said, the aroma is not as strong as I expect. Pours a muddy brown from the bottle but when it settles into the glass it's very dark brown, almost black, with a nice tan head with fair retention. Decent lacing. Flavor is coffee, slight dark chocolate, and grapefruit is noticeable. Bitter coffee and grapefruit finish with a moderate coffee aftertaste. I dont pick up the mocha all that much. Its there, but barely noticeable. Mouthfeel is a little thin. As I drink, the chocolate flavor becomes more noticeable. Nothing special, better porters out there.
