On tap @ Bent Elbow - a dark, almost black ale with a 2 finger cap. Very hoppy and roasty nose to this. Moderate carbonation. Rich chew of roasty malts in front is instantly balanced with PacNW hopping, some cocoa, long roasty bittering finish. Quite a decent Cascadian dark. I think Flying monkeys netherworld is a tastier Cascadian but this ale is more satisfying. Sturdier and more robust. Nice drinkng.

Hops galore! Kind of a 1 trick pony. Pour is very dark w/ a tan head & leaves some lacing. Huge bitterness upfront that lingers throughout the finish. Somewhat disappointing - I was hoping for some more depth!

Pours a brownish amber (not black that’s for sure) with a medium creamy bubbly light tan head that laced. Aroma of fresh citrusy and pine hops, caramel and honey roasted nuts. Flavor of toffee, caramel, tobacco, pine and citrusy hop notes. A solid dose of malt flavors going on here with the aggressive American hops to balance. They didnt hit the black in the appearance on this one and are getting too much of the malt flavor. More like a hoppy amber. Great beer but not a black IPA.

Draft at PDX. Pours a hazy, dark copper color with a thin, tan head. Malty aroma with a hint of hops. Red aleish type flavor with a nice kick of hops. It is actually really hoppy. Nice beer and it has been a while since i put back some Rogues.

65cl bottle @Lúpulo Feroz, Oviedo. Aroma is slighlty coffee, some nuts, Pours black, with off-white head, poor retemption and lacing. Medium body, soft carbonation, oily texture. Taste is mild bitter, smooth, chocolate and some coffee. Interesting one.

On tap at the Bocktown, nice place. Not much detectable aroma., just clean and no fragrance. Dark appearance. Thin skummy looking head. Wew, first taste is ropey bitter stuff. Not sure if I’d call this IPA in nature but it could behave a little better on my tongue. Nasty nellie on the taste buds. Relatively strong bitter medicine. Not exceptionally bitter, like most IPA but it is bitter fer sure. Gets astringent inthe back of the throat on the finish. On the finish, after it ssettles in, it is not too pleasant for a lager lover. Just a small amount of detectable co2. Not a pleasant pheasant.

Tap. Pours a clear light brown to dark amber body with a small fizzy off white head that fell to a wispy film. The nose is pretty nice, plenty of fresh hops, some noticeable Simcoe for sure. Pretty light on the malt and minimal Rogue ’house’ character. The flavor is a bit overly thin, not much malt to back up the hops. The hops are still pretty bright and tasty, but fades to a slightly bland and thin finish. Not bad, but it lacks in the ’porter like’ qualities that I want in a Black IPA. Not the worst Rogue beer though.

Color marron oscuro y espuma marron densa y persistente. Aroma especiado y lupulado. En boca maltas caramelo y dulzor, con especias y final lupulado y seco.

Imaena (2295) - Maputo, MOZAMBIQUE - JAN 28, 2013
Draught. Not an exceptional Black IPA. It is aggressively hopped as one expects from rouge. A bit thin.
