The name sort of says it all. John Maier, our Brewmaster, wanted to create a beer that defied traditional style definitions. The result was a remarkably hoppy yet balanced and malty ale that quickly became a cult favorite in our Newport brewpub. But what was it? It was not quite a barley wine and not quite a double or imperial IPA. Who really cares about putting beers into narrow categories? Great beer is great beer - just drink it and enjoy!

(Tap) hazy bright yellow colour with a small white head; aroma of citrus, jam; balanced flavour with a long medium bitter finish

Bottle - the pour is cloudy with a orange body and a creamy white head. The aroma is hops, barley, something bright I cannot peg. Maybe hints of cilantro. The taste is smooth, I see the barely wine, and Imperial ipa, the overall impression I get is a strong imperial beer. Good hop backbone followed by a good malt base and bright citrus and hoppy finish. The mouthfeel is thick and smooth with a nice carbonated finish.

Grunt fill from Albertsons. Dark golden dragon en body, instant small, fluffy head. Big warm, malty aroma, taste Ramos up the heat. Boozy notes, sweet malts, small bitter hops bite. Really nice on this cold wet day.

Beerclubsa (147) - Strand, SOUTH AFRICA - SEP 1, 2016
Aromas of tropical fruit and background citrus hops with medium caramel/bready malt and low to medium citrus hops and some esters. Pours an orange-deep golden, quite hazy with a long lasting, off white head. The palate is well balanced, with a medium alcohol warmth and stone fruit hops mixed with bready malt and a medium high hop bitterness. Long, balanced finish. It may be because it was the last beer of the evening, but I didn’t find the alcohol as harsh as some other raters.

SlackerMads (3360) - DENMARK - AUG 5, 2016
Bottle in sommerhus. Hazy golden, large white head. Massive booze, sugar, green plants, dry flowers, hay, wood. Heavy bitterness. Rough and boozy enough to kill small animals and skinny nerds.

FROTHINGSLOSH (7667) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - JUL 27, 2016
Sampled on draft at Tapped this beer poured a murky orange-tan color with a medium sized creamy orange-white head that lingered and left great lacing. The aroma was sweet pine, orange and a bit of yeastiness. The flavor was bitter with a harsh alcohol presence, rough grapefruit, pine, orange and medicine. Amazing long finish. Moderately full bodied.

sunevdj (4084) - Copenhagen OE, DENMARK - JUL 22, 2016
Bottle in Sommerhuset. Pours a clear golden with a small off-white head. Sweet with a mellow dryness. Aromas of caramel malts and sprucey hops. Also hints of peaches and alcohol. Medium to full bodied. Medium to soft carbonation. Sweet and bitter finish.

Theydon_Bois (19188) - Hazlemere, the lower Xhitlerns, Buckinghamshire, ENGLAND - JUN 19, 2016
Bottle split at Sentinel, thanks to James, 20/05/16. Hazed orange amber with a decent off white head. Nose is sweet toffee, light biscuit malt whisper, spice, booze tunes, fruit esters. Taste comprises bitter orange, sweet licks, caramel dollop, light earthy hop, honeycomb. Full bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Decent enough barley wine.

WaddlingPlatypus (186) - Durham, ENGLAND - JUN 16, 2016
750ml bottle. Pale orange with a fine white head. Hops, elderflower, and faint orange on the nose, with a hint of haylage. Smooth flavour with aspirin bitterness, citrus, floral notes, and haylage. Pleasing dry mouthfeel and warmth upon swallowing.

ABUSEDGOAT (2729) - California, USA - JUN 6, 2016
Clear amber color, moderate head, good lace/retention. Aroma is grapefruit, citrus, caramel, orange, sweet malts, light alcohol. Medium to full body, tastes about what you’d expect it to - a hopped up barley wine with a fair amount of sweetness. Semi chewy, grapefruit and orange flavors in finish.
