The name sort of says it all. John Maier, our Brewmaster, wanted to create a beer that defied traditional style definitions. The result was a remarkably hoppy yet balanced and malty ale that quickly became a cult favorite in our Newport brewpub. But what was it? It was not quite a barley wine and not quite a double or imperial IPA. Who really cares about putting beers into narrow categories? Great beer is great beer - just drink it and enjoy!

This could be my favorite beer. The name is deceiving though. I was expecting something like a green flash palate wrecker, this is more of a straight DIPA not much barley wine about it. Perfect malt balance with a heavy dose of zesty pine dank hops. Alcohol very well hidden.

Whatever this is, Barleywine,or Imperial IPA, it is amazing. So strong (10.8% alcohol), and deliciously tasty.

Poured into a Rogue shaker. Light amber color with a mild cream colored head that dissipates. Aroma is very citrusy with some resinous hops. Flavor is more complex than the aroma suggests. Caramel malt notes along with a bunch of citrus, resinous hops, some alcohol, and some faint dark fruit notes. Barleywine + IPA makes sense! Interesting palate - thick, oily, sticky, and a touch fizzy, and it all works in beautiful harmony! This thing really is a mix of everything. Overall this is quite good and very drinkable for the ABV. I think Rogue may have pioneered a new category IIPAs and DIPAs move over, Barleywineish Imperial IPA sortas are set to take over as the next big trend!

Oh what an odd wonder! Golden with minimal head. Nose is a mixture of sweet and salty, taste goes through everything, from orange marmalade to malts, to again something salty that I cant identify. It goes smooth and creamy til the end without tasting the booze. Niiiiiice!

Bottle (and a cool one at that). Pours golden and clear, quite still, but with a decent head. The aroma is quite restrained, with just a hint of yeast and a little dish soap. The beer drinks exceptionally easy for a 10%er ... none of the evident malt, sugar, yeast nor esthers are anywhere near the obtuse, none big enough to scare away even some potential casual beer drinkers. Good stuff. (#5489, 14/17/2014)

On tap at Issaquah Brewhouse. Pours a hazy golden amber color with a medium white head that leaves great lacing. Smells of pine, citrus, mango, toffee and caramel. Tastes of the same things in the smell with a good hop presence. Mouthfeel is oily and creamy with great. Carbonation. I think this is one of the best Rogue beers Ive ever had. Great triple ipa, strong ale and barley wine flavor all mixed in one and it works. Interested in trying a bottle now of this to see if its any different.

This is a huge beer. Pours a hazy orange color with little carbonation. A swift swirl will produce a fast lacy head. Some bitter hop notes with a big yeasty alcohol presence. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

pours a hazy lazy unfiltered apricot yellow. smells of bready notes and caramel...nice...some earthy hops coming through. Taste is very earthy and yes its apparent after a few sips its an interesting brew...malts are in charge here but the hop bit lingers on the after-taste. Not unpleasant. Actually a damn good brew from Rogue. the end is sweet malts through a nice hop snap. I like it.

Capped, 750ml bottle, painted blue with a squidbilly crab for a label. Clear, orange color, white foam. Smells of an English BarleyWine, sweet wort nose, mellow hops. WHOA, this is a strong one. This beer will turn your scrotum inside out! Very strong. High alcohol, very fusel. Finishes with notes of bitter flavored wort, toasted grains, bitter, earthy hops. Wow. (4117) To the caveman!
