This beer is so cool to pour! The body mixes with the foam to form a creamy looking concoction. In color it is medium brown with a light tan head. Nose is fruity citrus hops. First flavor is tart hops, grapefruit, and pine. Bitterness comes very late, almost to the end of the glass. I kept waiting for some malt to come through but it never did. scraff (2125) - Baltimore, Maryland, USA - MAR 31, 2007
Draft at Frisco Grille - Black with lighter brown edges, thick tan creamy head. Nose was full of grapefruit zest, cocoa, mild coffee, and hints pine. Piney citric hop bitterness gets a nice soft chocolate and coffee backing from start to finish. Medium to full bodied, soft carbonation, dry bitter finish. Nice hopped up brew as typical from Rogue... xmarcnolanx (945) - Kirkwood, Missouri, USA - MAR 30, 2007
Wow, this is a fantastic beer. On Draft in AR Flying Saucer. The aroma is citrus and dark caramel sweetness. Taste is of bitter, bitter citrus hops and a piney finish. Wow, I want more of this. mgumby10 (1856) - Jupiter, Florida, USA - MAR 22, 2007
On draft at redlight. Pours pitch black with a thick, light brown head. Very hoppy aroma, some slight roastiness in the background. Taste is pretty piney hoppy, with a definite bitterness to it, especially in the aftertaste. I get some of that grapefruit hoppy taste somewhat, but its mostly pine. Tastes kind of like a dark IPA. Schwarzbier seems a little off, way too hoppy for that i think. JB175 (1665) - Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 19, 2007
On tap as Black Brutal Bitter. Schwarzbier my ass - this stuff is another unique Rogue American Strong that delivers a nice hop punch to the senses. Blackish pour with a nice citra-pine hop aroma. Taste was an interesting sweet/bitter mix that went well with spicy food. Nice brew.

tap- pizza plant under black brutal bitter, This beer is perfect for me because I really love IPA’s and I love porters. This appears to be the love child of both. Black as night, smells of hops, tastes of espresso and terrific pine-like hops. This company never disappoints. scoobyluv (511) - Asheville, North Carolina, USA - MAR 14, 2007
dark color which looked much like melted raisins. and of course, it tasted like melted raisins. it was wicked sweet which is usually not my taste but this was pretty damn good. i absolutely got no hops from this. the best beer of the night too which is sad it’s the one i started with Ibrew2or3 (8814) - Tempe, Arizona, USA - MAR 13, 2007
First pint out of the keg on tap @ Mellow Mushroom Tampa. Pours out a murky muddy brown with thin tan head. The aroma is a quick whiff of sweet malts that get run over by big pine hops and streaks of citrus. The flavor is all hops. I don’t sense any malts making it through the iron curtain of bitter pine and grapefruit hops. Could certainly use either more malts for balance or more age to take some of the edge off the hops. The more of it I drink the more the grapefruit dominates. GeneralGao (3614) - Iowa City, Iowa, USA - MAR 11, 2007
UPDATED: MAR 23, 2007 Poured a clear dark brown color with orange highlights. Head was thick and off white with good retention and lacing. Smells of grapefruity hops and subdued roasted malt. Dry and roasty with less hop flavor than I had expected from the aroma. Plenty of hop bitterness which lingers a bit. marchcow (664) - Coralville, Iowa, USA - MAR 8, 2007
On tap at the Sanctuary in Iowa City. Malty aroma with fruity notes. Black in color with foamy tan head. Flavor is good roasted malt sweetness with a bitter hop kick. Even palate, neither too thick or too thin. Good.
