To come up with a name for our Zäpfle bottle version of our Märzen Export, we went back to the history of this variety of beer.

Before refrigerators and ice machines existed, the last batches of bottom-fermented beer could only be brewed in March (März) at the latest. It was then cooled with naturally forming ice. To harvest the ice, two processes were commonly implemented. Large blocks of ice were frequently cut from the ice sheets of ponds that were frozen over. They were then stored in the cellars of breweries. The second process is what gave Eiszäpfle (or icicle in English) its name. Large wooden scaffolding was sprayed with water so that icicles would form on the beams. These could then be knocked off and used to cool the beer.

Our Märzen Export also used to be cooled in this way. Today we commemorate this laborious process with the name Eiszäpfle. The name, however, is also intended to inspire a thirst in summer months for this refreshing and aromatic Märzen Export beer, as well as provide comforting pleasure in winter when the icicles hang down outside from the edges of roofs.

50cl bottle shared with Kermis. Thin white head. Clear pale golden pour. Refreshing

Bionda piuttosto limpida, schiuma bianca compatta. Aroma di malto e cereali. Al palato totale dolcezza del malto, con una punta amara finale. Carbonazione media. Discreta.

I drank this beer in a imbiss in Lörrach, during a heavy rain. It is a classical beer but it is pleasant to drink. The taste is well balanced, malt, hop and sugar, nice mix between sweetness and bitterness, regular carbonation, yellow and gold color, thin and white foam.

La vraie bière de la Forêt Noire! La couleur y est, le parfum aussi. Agréable à boire avec un morceau de jambon fumé local. Une réussite !

Very fresh malt aroma
Lasting bitter finish
At the same time slight sweet stickiness
Thick in taste

A great German pils.

Bottle. Yellow in colour with a decent, white, head. Bready malts, straw, a hint of stone fruit and suggestion of grassy hops, before a moderately bitter finish. A good lager.

On pour, nice clear golden yellow colour with a pretty decent sized foamy white head, a good looking beer. Some lacing. Can hear the carbonation as it fizzes away, magic! Aroma: strong smell of the hops, citrus, very malty, sweet malts Taste: Sweet grainy maltiness at the start. Back end taste of the hops was nice. Felt stronger than the 5.6 for some reason….. A very subtle taste, has a good balance of malts and hops, quite tasty, nothing amazing but boy was it easy to drink…. Perfect balance in flavour, clean, crisp and very refreshing. A very easy beer to drink, very sessionable, could drink a lot of these easy enough as it was very smooth. Liked this beer a lot.

Flasche 0,33l: Goldgelb, klar, kräftige Schaumbildung; Frische, leicht süßliche Nase, gemälztes Getreide, leichte Hopfennoten; im Körper leichte Süße, malzig, leichte Frucht- und Hopfennoten; im Nachgang angenehme Bitterkeit mit malziger Süße

UPDATED: DEC 15, 2015 Clear golden color with white head that dissipates quickly. Bread crust and honey sweetness on the aroma. Taste starts sweet with malt, bread crust and a hint of honey. Gets more balanced towards the finish. Body is medium with crisp carbonation. Overall it’s quite drinkable in spite of the sweetness. One of my least favorite beer styles but I think this is one of the better Märzen beers.
