To come up with a name for our Zäpfle bottle version of our Märzen Export, we went back to the history of this variety of beer.

Before refrigerators and ice machines existed, the last batches of bottom-fermented beer could only be brewed in March (März) at the latest. It was then cooled with naturally forming ice. To harvest the ice, two processes were commonly implemented. Large blocks of ice were frequently cut from the ice sheets of ponds that were frozen over. They were then stored in the cellars of breweries. The second process is what gave Eiszäpfle (or icicle in English) its name. Large wooden scaffolding was sprayed with water so that icicles would form on the beams. These could then be knocked off and used to cool the beer.

Our Märzen Export also used to be cooled in this way. Today we commemorate this laborious process with the name Eiszäpfle. The name, however, is also intended to inspire a thirst in summer months for this refreshing and aromatic Märzen Export beer, as well as provide comforting pleasure in winter when the icicles hang down outside from the edges of roofs. 13.4%

TEJA (3257) - Stockholm, SWEDEN - APR 7, 2017
Sampled at Hofbräu Abensberg. Big and lasting white head. Clear solid yellow color. Small aroma of conserved cherries. Mild and malty taste. Well fermented to give a dry finnish with a medium to big body.

sjogro (4734) - The Hague, NETHERLANDS - MAR 29, 2017
Bottle at home. Clear golden with white head. Sweet malts, grain, corn, butter, sugar, bit dusty/cardboardy. Moderate sweet and bitter. Under medium body, soft carbonation, bit malty feel.

Michael27 (2357) - Berlin, GERMANY - JAN 1, 2017
Aus der Flasche getrunken (REWE Heidelberg). Klares Gold mit schöner Schaumkrone im Glas. Sieht besser aus, als es schmeckt. Ganz spät kommt gewisse Hopfennote.

Ritzn (1808) - GERMANY - DEC 28, 2016
Clear golden/amber with almost no head. Aroma is crispy hops, lemon juice, some toast. Taste is a malty body with some alcohol, crispy sweetness and sourness, much hop tartness. Not so easy to drink due to the alcoholic feel in the mouth. Meh.

hauxe (937) - Butzbach, Hesse, GERMANY - OCT 29, 2016
Pours gold with a foamy white head that soon fades. Aroma has hints of lemon, corn, herb but is overall subdued. Taste trends sweet but is complemented by a green apple sourness. Underneath it all is a grainy bitterness with light metallic notes. Nice balance actually. Too bad I don’t particularly like it. Adequate carbonation over a medium body. Seems well made, but not up my alley.

kermis (14553) - The Hague / Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS - SEP 26, 2016
Bottle shared thanks to Deanso. Clear golden with a white head. Aroma of malt, yeast, light fruity hops and green apple. Flavour is above light sweet and bitter. Above light bodied with moderate carbonation. [05-09-2016]

LomYst (914) - Rotterdam, NETHERLANDS - SEP 15, 2016
Viezige riolige mouten, nare bitterheid op tong en in afdronk... verder erg zoet... toch redelijk drinkbaar... stevig

Blueshawk (464) - Bad Bellingen, GERMANY - SEP 14, 2016

deanso (10101) - Chiang Mai, THAILAND - SEP 5, 2016
50cl bottle shared with Kermis. Thin white head. Clear pale golden pour. Refreshing

lello4ever (1192) - ITALY - AUG 18, 2016
Bionda piuttosto limpida, schiuma bianca compatta. Aroma di malto e cereali. Al palato totale dolcezza del malto, con una punta amara finale. Carbonazione media. Discreta.
