Bottle from a trade. Nose is huge in caramel. Toffee, sweet. No hops at all. like an imperial amber ale. Not a good sign. Taste follows with a gross sweetness that sticks to my tongue and won’t let me taste anything other than burnt sugar, bread, molasses. no. stop. bad. jgb9348 (6476) - Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA - DEC 4, 2016
Clear golden and lightly coppered coloured body with a thin, faint off-white head about a centimetre tall. Aroma of light grass, tropical fruits and a touch of metal and nuts. Light to Medium-bodied; Strong nutty and earthy malt flavours at first with a smooth and noticeable, but low alpha acid hop flavour showing some grain and subdued sweetness. Aftertaste has a little pungency with some smooth alcohol and metallic flavours around, but the hops are relatively mild and the malt is only a touch nutty. Overall, a light IPA with some smooth but non-remarkable qualities, which is too bad compared to the other beers I’ve had from this brewery. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Alexandria, Virginia on 15-November-2016 for US$2,17 sampled at home in Washington on 04-December-2016 after returning from New York.

So, is a “southern triangle” anything like a “map of Tasmania”? ANZ rude phrases aside, this isn’t particularly “southern”, as far as I can tell - certainly I’m not getting any of the white wine vinous notes I associate with Nelson Sauvin. It’s a little foamy, which doesn’t bother me overly much, especially since the head retention is so good. But it’s also fairly malt-forward, which does bother me, a little. It’s not even that high an ABV, so there’s no particular reason the hops couldn’t be a bit more dominant over the malt, in my opinion. Solid, I guess, if uninspired. (14/20)
