UPDATED: APR 9, 2014 Moderate hops for an IPA, blended nicely with malts. Citrus hops with smooth coffee, light chocolate, pine, light caramel and molasses. Hints of grass. Not revolutionary but solid nonetheless. Petkus331 (389) - Redford, Michigan, USA - MAR 3, 2011
The aroma is very hoppy, mostly floral with a bit of citrus followed by a gentle charred malt background of chocolate. The flavor is a little resinous, enjoyably bitter, i’m guessing 70-80 IBU’s. At first it seems to be like a regular IPA, but a few seconds after taking a sip the charred malt flavor comes into play with chocolate and light nutty flavor. This is a very nice brew . The only thing i don’t like so much about this beer is that it feels a little flat in the mouth, it could use a bit more carbonation, but overall, a great beer. This Black IPA may be a little more hoppy than Stone’s Self Righteous Ale (Black IPA).
