Cask at The Waterhouse (JDW), Durham, £2.05/pint. Pours deep, reddish brown with lasting, creamy head. Damp, earthy aroma leads to some malty, cereal, caramel and hay flavour with light smokiness. A little thin on the palate and on the whole a simple, effective beer.

Cask handpull at the Flying Pig, Cambridge. Mid- to dark brown with a reddish tinge. Woodsmoke, milky coffee, cinnamon and red currant aroma. Sweet taste with a slight bitter, almost astringent edge. A bit muddly but good overall.

Dark ruby mild, a quite pleasant nutty, fruitcake aroma. Dark fruit flavour, hintof soy sauce, a dry, lightly hopped finish. A decent stab at a ruby ale froma decent brewery, but lack of carbonation and lack of depth means a fairly average score only.

Its reputation goes before. Excellent colour with nice shading. Nuts in the scent. Malt on the tongue. A pleasing sweetness. And at a strength where one can have a second glass. Accolades deserved.
