A wee angry scotch ale is part of the Russell Brewmaster Series: a succession of small batch beers that push taste boundaries and explore new styles of beers. This beer has been brewed with a blend of Scottish specialty malts in the style of a 19th century 90 Shilling Scotch Ale - a strong, dark ale with a dominant malt accent that originated in Edinburgh. This batch of beer was brewed by Jack Bensley, Eric Dubuc and Anders McKinnon, Russell Brewing Company 2010.

Pours clear brown with one finger of light beige head diminishing gradually to a thin cap, moderate lacing. (4/5) Nose is muted, burnt dark malt, coffee, treacle, oak. (6/10) Taste is moderate sweet, mild bitter. (6/10) Medium body, moderate carbonation, lingering mild bitter finish. (3/5) Fairly unremarkable wee heavy. Its an OK interpretation, but not good enough to overcome my ambivalence towards the style. Maybe thats a touch unfair, but I actually have had ones that did succeed in doing so, so (12/20)

Pours clear and dark brown but see through. With a 1 inch head that becomes an edge hugger with spotty lacing. The taste is roasted malts, dark fruit, booze, oak and vanilla. A very good mixture, would have again.

Its ok. Not a huge fan of this type. Nothing memorable, nothing horrible, its just a mildly sweet scotch ale.

Bottle. Rich coffee and dark chocolate aroma. Pours dark brown with very little head. Coffee, dark chocolate, brown sugar and a bit of nuts in the flavour. Medium bodied. A touch of bitterness in the finish.

341ml bottle to tulip glass, the beer pours a dark reddy brown with hardly any head which fades rapidly. Aroma is very faint but has notes of butterscotch, caramel, brown sugar, and a bit of grass. The taste and palate are where this beer really shine as its sweet with notes of caramel and toffee but well balanced by grassy and spicy hops. Carb is medium, body medium thin, very drinkable beer. Overall...saving grace? The other beers I tried from these guys werent very good but this one is quite nice.

65 cl bottle, Calgary, AB, Canada via coop. Ruby brown, caramel root beer aroma. Sweet, then balanced hops. Medium finish. Quite drinkable, not that memorable though.

Poured from oversized bottle. Clear dark brown with a quickly fading tan head. Notes of toasted malt, bread, and coffee on the nose. Flavour is subtle burnt malts, oak, caramel, coffee, and dark chocolate. Light body. Medium carbonation. Overall too muted for my taste.
