COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncle’s legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

Bottle. Awesome hop aroma. The taste has some strong citrus. Not too much bitterness. A very mild astringency in the aftertaste. Lacking in complexity. Excellent overall.

Late check in. 28 days old bottle. Oily for the style, no alcohol, unbelievably balanced, hopped enough. Tasty and drinkable. I’m glad I finally tried it. // 2 weeks old bottle a few months later. Clean, piney, grapefruity. Balanced as remembered. Nothing outstanding but simply very good.

510ml bottle (RBESG Grand Tasting 2017). Pale golden color. Medium size, white head, stays. Sweet, caramel, citrus, fruity in aroma. Fruity, citrus, herbal, hops in taste. Soft bitterness. Dry herbal hops in aftertaste. Nothing is punch in the face. Quite opposite, shy and mellow. Alcohol is... what alcohol? Pleasant in mouth. Excellent brew.

UPDATED: AUG 11, 2017 On tap at Rogue Eastside, Portland. Clear, golden with a big head. Smells of pine and fresh grass. Taste and body mean business. Dry on the palate. Nice but it’s reputation makes it difficult to live up to in these days of serious, juicy DIPAs.

F: not big, white, average retention. C: gold, almost clear. A: tangerine, orange, peach, pine, bit of herbal. T: fresh tangerine juice, orange, pine, bit of grapefruit, medium body and carbonation, very good balanced, I wish to have the whole bottle, fully enjoyed, sample from 51cl bottle @ RBESG 2017, Grand tasting in Tallin, Estonia.

Educators on tap- malty goodness in nose and subtle evergreen hops. Great clear caramel. Good piney hoppyness with a light crispness. Lingering hops.

Finally the great Pliny. Tried at on tap at Toronado SD and Toronado SF also bottle (in that order). Have to say wasn’t impressed with the beer at Toronado SD at all, there is a possibility something went wrong, although they said keg date was OK. I’ll focus on other two experiences with this beer. Pours cloudy golden with medium white head. Good lacing. Medium to strong hoppy aroma, pine, fruit, solid malty backbone, citrus, grassy, some sweetness leading to strong and lasting bitter finish. Medium+ bodied. Dry finish. Very good beer for sure, not a game changer for me. Maybe trying it too late in the game. I’ll try it again hopefully, wondering what the impressions will be next time.

Pliny the Elder is close to being the perfect IPA and don’t ask me what the perfect IPA is because I haven’t found it yet. Pliny is bursting with hop aroma and taste. It starts out wonderfully and finishes even better. Hope to get my hands on more of this in the future.
