COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncles legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

Happy Christmas to me, not my first Pliny... but my first review of therin for Happy Christmas nonetheless. Ha. Bottle to Duvel tulip, a lovely orange hue that is crystal clear with a huge pillowy/cloudy 3 finger head. Grapefruit/Citrus fruit blast to the face, fucking beautiful aroma. Aggressive hop profile without ever being too bitter, tons of depth of complexity. Grassy, tangy, floral, citrus, every hop charachteristic you could ask for masterfully blended. This beer lives up to the hype without question, medium to full mouthfeel, low but perfect carbonation. Great lacing as it goes down, finish is smooth and long and linger-ery. This beer is DIPA tops for a reason and I whole-heartedly concur! Seek this beer out and drink it fresh. (mine was dated 11.25, right around a month not to shabby, especially since it made it to Michigan) Word!

500mL bottle Bottled 04.26.16 Deep golden body, creamy dense white head hangs around Lovely resiny hop nose - pine, elderflower, ripe peach/nectarine, passionfruit with delicious biscuity, toasty, bread crust malt. Body is spot on - chewy, slick & resiny with hops, good weight but doesnt feel like an 8%er. Malt shines through more on the body - that lovely toasted bread/brioche sort of malt, pale caramels & sweet biscuits, hops compliment this with notes of stonefruit, passionfruit, pine needle & savoury spice. Firm, lingering bitterness, very well balanced. Not as fresh as I would have liked but it doesnt detract too much from what is an amazing beer!

Bright copper-golden pour, crystal clear. Nose of resin/pine, ripe grapefruit, Valencia orange, hints of pastel candy, gently sweet and reserved biscuity malt. Flavor is extremely balanced. I can see why so many have loved this. Its nothing complex, new, or extreme. The gently sweet malt backs a hint of pine and resin, grapefruit and orange, and floral lemon zest, all in harmony. Even a warming alcohol sensation begins to develop, but its somehow endearing. All in all, Pliny is all about the balance. Textbook west-coast.

This is the only double IPA I will only drink! Great beer, fresh aromas and really have a developed flavor. I prefer out of the keg verses the bottle as there is a different flavor to me between the two.

500ml bottle from the Bierkoning Amsterdam

Aroma: A lot of fruity scents in the aroma, tropical fruits and some grapefruit to be exact. No grassy scents, but there is a slight caramel feel. Resin comes out when warmed. Anyways, a great aroma!

Looks: Copper with off white head and some lacing

Taste: Dry and fruity, some resin, very intense tropical fruity hoppiness. Medium bitter, very nicely balanced bitterness. Amazing fruitiness.

Feel: medium body, medium carbonation

Overall:Benchmark IIPA for me! Loved it!

Tap at Royal Oak, San Francisco. Clear dark amber. Strong hops, citrusy. The flavor has perfect balance, high bitterness, light sweetness, piney, caramel malt. Very nice.

On tap at the brewery. Great pine and citrus aromas. Mouthfeel is perfectly balanced between malt and hops. The finish is malty sweet and ends dry. Overall a top 5 DIPA and worthy of the chase.

Pours a transparent amber with a sizable, frothy white head. piney, tropical fruits, perfectly balanced. Medium carbonation, excellent mouthfeel. Just an overall well-balanced beer, definitely deserving of its high rating.

UPDATED: NOV 16, 2016 Attractive, slender 510 mL bottle gifted from a gracious coworker whom had been touring San Fransisco previously.
Kyle, seriously - tusen takk, min venn!

The pour is an effervescent golden rod with weighty foam atop. Leisurely, it frosted downward to the liquid after three minutes of settlement.
-------- the last 4 years, this beer was absent from my alcoholic consumption.------&# />

Right up to the lip of the snifter, chives and a gloriously obnoxious Columbus hop layer become overly apparent on the nose. This introduction is followed hesitantly by honeydew melon, paper pulp, dried jasmine, white tea, pine cones, saturated cardboard, apple cores, and stale crumpets.
I took a sip, and gulped it down - I experienced the same flavors, but bitter & Valencia orange peels, lavender, gym socks, and mint overwhelmed my tongues processing. A rebound peck carrying unripe kiwifruit, wildflowers, and marsh sage participated in my swallows examination.
An exceptionally clean, delicious fill. I consider this to be a wonderful, enigmatic IPA, though I certainly became perplexed on its bitterness - which wasnt intense by any means, but pushed more of a "hop vagueness" in a way I didnt know how to respond to it.
I remember this as a juicer beer, with tropical fruit (guava, pineapple, papaya) notes and American yeast galore.
Incredible how things have changed so quickly.

Backlog, pite kilkanaście razy. Świeże wymiata. Fantastyczny aromat, dużo żywic i owocw, w smaku zdecydowanie wytrawne, z potężną, a jednocześnie niesamowicie przyjemną goryczką. Jedno z najlepszych IPA jakie piłem.
