COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncles legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

My first Russian River beer! Pours a classic sunset orange color with a two finger off white head that dissipates slowly and leaves great lacing. Great carbonation coming off the glass. Pungent, dank hops as soon as the bottle is opened. Get grapefruit, mango, peach, and lots of tropical fruit like a papaya, guava, or pineapple. Slight sweet bready malt in the background. Taste is insane. Starts with a ton of sweet, fruity flavors from the hops: peach, mango, grapefruit, some pine. Then get some bread from the malt, as well as some carmel sweetness that balances it slightly. The finish makes this beer. Lots of resinous tropical fruits like the papaya or guava mentioned earlier, as well as more grapefruit, pineapple, mango, pine. Very dry and bitter finish that lasts on the palate. Some alcohol but goes well with the flavors. Tastes very much like a fruit salad in my opinion. The carmel, bready malt does last through the finish to try to balance the enormous amounts of hops. Pretty full body with a creamy and sticky mouthfeel with nice refreshing carbonation. Lives up to the hype in my opinion. A hopheads dream beer and one of the most flavorful double ipas Ive had in recent memory.

Easy to see and taste why this is rated so well. Lots of hops from beginning to end! Pine scent keeps the nose busy.

Sampled from bottle at Maakuns. Big thanks!! Clear gold with thin white head. Sweet malts, big citrus and fresh exotic fruit, big weedy and skunky hops. Explosive aroma. Moderate sweet and bitter, nettly hoppiness gives it a crisp spicy edge. Medium body, nice smooth and cool malty feel. Soft carbonation. Great stuff.

Bottle shared. Clear golden with white head. Grapefruit, apricot, light dank weeds, sweet malts. Good balance between the hops and malts here! Great match between aroma and taste. Medium sweet and bitter. Over medium bodied with slight creamy sugary feel. Very good.

Poured from the bottle into a pint glass to drink. The beer had a mostly clear gold color with a very slight amber hue and a very large foamy white head with extremely long-lasting retention along with modest cling and lacing. Its aroma was dominated by fresh citrus and pine scents, featuring light grapefruit and perhaps watermelon, with touches of lemon, straw, and a bit of barley. The taste was a strong bitter blend of different citrus flavors along with an influx of pine and spices and slight touches of watermelon and grapefruit. There was also a very subtle malt character, lending just a touch of caramel and sweetness. The beer had a very filling and thick mouthfeel with a lot of density, character, and ample carbonation for a heavy swallow. A fairly drinkable beer, which masks the relatively high alcohol content exceptional well; excellent beer, as advertised!

Really good but a little overrated. Plenty of other great IPAs out there. Still, you could do a lot worse.

Aroma:
Medium/heavy aroma of malts, caramel, orange, tropical fruit, pine, hops, citrus and grapefruit.

Appearance:
Clear/hazy golden/amber beer with heavy yeast and with a slight/medium white/off-white head.

Taste/Palate:
Starts medium/heavy sweet with malts, caramel, orange, tropical fruit and pine; ends slightly bitter and dry with hops, citrus and grapefruit.

Overall:
This beer is intense, complex and balanced. Great aroma and palate, with an even better flavour. Shamefully this beer is filtered to oblivion. The appearance takes the biggest hit thanks to this, but I bet that the other aspects would have been better as well if they did not make that decision.

UPDATED: FEB 5, 2017 Pure gold, color and beer! Foamy white head with a lot of soapy lacing. Smells dank, piney, grapefruit citrus and a bit tropical along with some sweet biscuity malts. Bitter and yet wonderfully balanced. Creamy smooth palate. One resplendent beer.
