COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pliny the Elder was a Roman naturalist, scholar, historian, traveler, officer, and writer. Although not considered his most important work, Pliny and his contemporaries created the botanical name for hops, "lupus Salictarius", meaning wolf among scrubs." Hops at that time grew wild among willows, much like a wolf in the forest. Later the current botanical name, humulus Lupulus, was adopted. Pliny died in 79 AD while observing the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was immortalized by his nephew, Pliny the Younger, who continued his uncleís legacy by documenting much of what he observed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny the Elder, the beer, is brewed with 40% more malt and over twice the amount of hops as compared to our already hoppy IPA.

1 pint bottle. Pours a beautiful golden amber color, pearly white head, great lacing too. Aroma is piney hops. Flavor is outstanding, probably the freshest hop flavor Iíve tasted. Fresh hops up front, with a nice malty backside. Palate is perfect for an IPA, on the heavier side, but it suits this perfectly. Overall an incredible beer. Thanks to my friend Eddy from Santa Rosa for this one!

I had two bottles of Pliny at Wades Wines Tasting Room in Spring 2017, and loved it. This is a flagship West Coast IPA, and stands up to it's reputation. Although local breweries are producing Doubles as good, if not better, I wouldn't turn it down. Strong and smooth, but with some bitterness I could do without. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: JUN 25, 2017 From tap at APEX, Portland. Big tropical fruit and pine aroma with grapefruit, sweetish fruits, orange, biscuity malt, pine resin. Flavour is moderate sweet with a long bitter dry-ish finish. Body is medium. Great balance, big tropical fruits, truly one of the finest IIPAís. ♡♡♡ Enjoyed again from tap at Toronado, San Francisco. Just as good. ♡♡♡ 26-6-17 Enjoyed from bottle, bought at Russian River, Santa Rosa. Fresh bottle, so the beer comes out very good.

Bottle into glass. Piney grapefruit aroma. Pours a clear golden with white head. Medium bitter taste. Smooth texture. Good IPA.

American classic. Pours light and clear. Lots of hops in the aroma: resin, pine, a bit of kerosene, some citrus, no tropical notes. The aroma predicts a dry and hoppy beer, which the taste confirms. Bitter, dry, great west coast IPA. In the times of sweet NE IPAs, this one is a very nice refreshment. Thumbs up!

510ml bottle - thanks Helen proximally, and random visitor from S.F. ultimately!
Bottled 29 days ago, thatís one of the freshest US hop-oriented beers Iíve ever had. Pale gold, crystal clear, brief loose head. Pretty fruity hops, but some sweaty stankiness too, and a promise of bitterness. Once the chillís off, some caramel appears too. Light palate, crisp carbonaton, but not lacking fullness. Oooooh, thatís a very pleasing taste - very citrussy/lemony hop forward, would not be surprised to see citra several times in the hop schedule - but with a very pleasant balance and drinkability to it. Like the bitter bite, makes my teeth slighty metallic. Light malts gently support the hops, but play second fiddle. Strange for a hop-forward beer to be better in the taste than the aroma, but Iím very happy itís so. Finish gets more bitter, more herbal, and even with a bit of seared pork fat in it, which I particularly like. Really picked up after the aroma.

I recently bought 2 bottles from April 2017 production and tried them on two separate occasions. In short, this IPA is OK but I wasnít impressed and felt underwhelmed with all of the hype about it. The best part is its fragrance - very floral. Taste is like a common IPA with plenty of hop flavor, fairly bitter, and light/watery mouthfeel. Didnít really detect any creaminess. Probably itís better on tap and would be curious to try it but I wonít be making the effort to find this in bottle again anytime soon.
