A hazy brown beer with some rafts of foam floating around. Somewhat boozy nose with notes of calvados, raisins, figs and herbs/menthol (Fernet Branca). Taste is quite sweet with oxidized sherry flavors and a sweet, lingering finish. Soft carbonation and hefty, syrupy palate. The beer looks delicious, it had everything I like in a beer. The color of the beer is a beautiful dark brown, and the beer is very cloudy, giving almost a creamy look. The beer looks a bit like coffee. On of the beer there is a nice layer of soft, creamy almond colored foam. The bulk of the foam collapses quickly, but a beautiful silky drape remains.
The smell of the beer is lovely. I didn’t knew what to expect from the beer in the first place, but this exceeds all expectations. Here is a very very strong malt aroma, stronger than I’ve ever experienced. It’s well balanced, containing delicious toasty aromas of roasted barley, sweeter normal malt aromas and even a nice savory touch, also if the roasted malts. Some nice refreshing hops are also present. I like the beer. Aromas contain chocolate, coffee and some caramel. As the beer warms up, more and more aromas fill the glass. Perfect.
The taste is also brilliant. It’s more like a barley wine here. The bitter and slightly savory strong roast aroma is not as strong as in the smell. There are more nice sweet malt aromas, giving a rich, almost syrupy sweetness to the beer. In the background there still is a nice savory and bitter malt touch. Yes in lovely balance. It just is a tiny bit to watery. Where the smell is very strong, the taste is a tiny bit weak, especially compared to the smells.
The palate truly fits the beer. The beer is really smooth and has a somehow creamy texture. Carbonation is medium light, but that fits the creamy texture. 33cl bottle. Clear dark brown colour with a small tan head. Roasted malts, chocolate, licorice and caramel in the aroma. Average carbonation and medium body. Looks: Opague blackish brown colour with a layer of yeast sediments; Half finger head and light beige foam which lasts for 1 minute; Good sticky lacing with active small carbonation.
Aroma: Fragrant and sweet dark malt, with strong chocolate, strong caramel, toffee, vanilla, apple flesh, dark fruits, floral nectar, honey, earth, strong yeast and light lemon.
Taste: Mid to strong sweet full dark malt, with strong caramel, sticky toffee, toast, very light dark fruits, dark chocolate, light coffee, floral, molasses, strong earth, biscuits, strong yeast, fair lemon, strong bitter hops and grass.
Body: Close to medium body. Quite slick palate.
Mouth Feel: Rick dark maltyness in a pretty watery background. Lots of caramel and sticky toffee complimented by good toastyness. Very good dark chocolates with coffee and dark fruits undertones. Sweetness is just right medium. Earthy and biscuity with solid lemony-hoppy-toasty rounding. The 10.4% booze is very well-hidden with no knock-on whatsoever. Neat!
Hoppiness: Floral nectar, earth, and light lemon in nose, and stronger in taste; Bitterness - toasy malt and hop-wise - is quite strong for a lasting, mid-to-high astringent sweet-bitter malty finish.
After Taste: Fairly dry. Toasty and fairly bitter to mouth.
Comments: As a barley wine, this one is somewhat slim in body and short of bombastic winey or liquor-ish characters, but it’s more than make up with very solid dark toasted maltyness, neat fruity aroma, good chocolate taste, invisible booze, and a pretty strong hoppy bitterness. The 101 of Barley Wine, suitable for first-timers of the style as well as for those who wants something not too heavy. A nice and easy one!
