Picked this up in a limited edition tin at Dan Murphy's for $7.91 and really didn't expect too much from it. I was really pleasantly surprised. Nice hoppy caramel & citrus aroma. The taste is similar but quite sweet and nice & velvety. While not the greatest barley wine I've ever had, it's one of the best value for money I've found. Will definitely have it again.

Bottle from Dan Murphy’s December 2013. One of those beers that you have no expectation of but really surprises you. Beer seems to change colour as you drink it, golden caramel colour with tan swirls throughout. The alcohol burns kicks in at the end of each mouthful. ColaKid (82) - AUSTRALIA - MAY 3, 2014

Malt spice fruit aroma. Brown colour with good head and lacing. Spice fruit malt flavour. Smooth palate.

A lot less than 640ml in the bottle as it was lifted out the LE tin (good measure). Feel a little robbed as the bottle was well short of full. Cap comes off with light effort. Caramelised apricot, peach and lemon peel; sweet with a candied, sticky unfermented malt profile and just a whiff of fusels. Heated, sticky, caramelised malts on the palate with a bitter weedy and piney, stonefruit and citric finish that melds well. Husky, puffy: the type of beer you don’t drink on a first date for fear of the inevitable late night kiss. Low carbonation; liqueurish, viscous but not oily. Raisins, prunes and burnt fruit sugars dominate but amongst the helm it works well. So sweet, but balanced by an underlying pitch and downfall of the ol’ tongue. O’ drunk! Treacly, bitter sweet citrus with a buttery brioche centre. Swallow this and I am still chewing at it. Do you know what, Barley wine..., English Barley wine, this pulls it off. An hour later it is elixir fill and heated, long and sticky. Drammy, deeply citrusy; it is one to cool off in the bottle for a few years me thinks. I like it! ....., and I’m pretty hardcore!!! Pours a reddish brown with a slight haze. Small white head. Aroma is very sweet. Strong caramel and sweet stone fruit. And at 11% the alcohol is very distinguishable. Taste also has some spice to match the strong fruit and malt flavors. Finished with an alcohol warmth. Some metallic flavour with noticeable diacetyl. From 640 ml bottle. Pours a murky brown with a small off-white head. Aromas are booze, stewed fruit, chalk and a hint of cocoa. Taste is really dominated by booze which overwhelms the subtler flavours. Harsh, almost chemical, notes wash over the malts and fruit. For all the booze, the body is relatively light. Bit of a mess. Poured a cloudy coppery orange with a one-finger light tan frothy head that retained OK and slowly dimi8nished to a collar. Carbonation high and coarse. Aroma of sweet caramel malts and toffee with a nice spicy hops but unfortunately over-ridden by alcohols. Taste of sweet caramel and very sweet fruit followed by a biting spiciness and alcohol. Medium body. Finish too sweet, long, spicy with alcohol rawness. Poorly hidden alcohol lets the beer down.
