Dark lagers were the norm until the late 19th century and they still exist today in Franconia, north of Munich. We have recreated this ancient lager using toasted Munich barley malt, then slow matured it for up to six weeks to develop rich toffee caramel flavours.

Warning! Early amateur rating! Dark lager. Smooth and malty. Not complex but pretty drinkable.

330ml bottle from Sainsbury’s. Reddish/brown, perfectly clear with a medium/thin off-white head. Slight hint of roasted malt in the sweetish malty aroma. Smooth and slightly sweet at first there’s a bitter, malty finish. Not bad, I’ll give it another go.

This copper beer has a toasty aroma and a complex flavour of fruit and roasted malt with some smokiness with a bit of a boozy kick in the finish. This is my first Dunkel style beer and I was rather impressed.

Roasted coffee and nutty aroma. Pours with a very dark brown hue and off white head. Roasted coffee, toffee and nutty flavour with some faint woody notes. Very malty finish. Good stuff.

Bottle. Clear, copper pour, leaving an off-white to beige head. Roasted nose with some fruits and caramel. Roasted, caramel flavor with a fruityness to balance it. Medium body. A quite nice one, yet not "up there". (071005)

(Bottle 33 cl) Courtesy of yngwie. Clear, warm, dark amber golden with an off-white head. Lightly fruity and caramellish aroma. Fairly light in body with roasted and lightly bitter malt accents and a fairly bitter finish. 051007

33 cL bottle. Pours dark brown with a lacing white head. Slight roasted aroma. Flavour is dry roasted malt, not with much sweetness though. Bitterness both from the roasted malt and the hops. Ends roasted malty and slight bitter in the finish. Nice.
