A rich, dark beer packed with intense flavours of chocolate and spicy liquorice. This style of beer was very popular in London during the 18th century and can trace its roots back to 1720. It is brewed with charred malt and English hops to give a truly unique flavour. This is Shepherd Neame’s delicious interpretation of this classic beer.

500ml bottle. ar: Blackcurrant. ap: dark brown, thick head, dissipating. ta: medium-sweet, medium bitterness. pa: medium body, creamy texture, carbonation lively, liquorice finish. Overall: Effervescent in mouth, tends to mask flavour. Might be worth leaving 10 minutes in glass.

bottle from sainsb. pours dark brown with a thick creamy head. roasty fresh coffee nose with crisp hops. tastes of dark malts, soft toffee fruits, bitter cocoa powder. short but decent. too fizzy, overpowers the flavour somewhat. a longer mellower taste would’ve been better. glad i got it tho gj

Swaroga (2221) - Warszawa, POLAND - JAN 25, 2017
Surprisingly well carbonated, dark brown but watery beer with roasted notes of coffee and black chocolate. Quite dry with delicate dark chocolate like sweetish background. Very traditional apart the strong carbonation.

Bottle. Black in colour; Deep Ruby Red against bright light. Frothy coffee coloured head. Aroma of roast malts and coffee. Very Malty; roasty malts, lots of roast coffee, dark chocolate and a hint of liquorice. Hoppy; some hop bitterness. Bitter roast malty throughout with strong coffee and chocolate. Dry roast malty finish. Pretty good. Very drinkable. Decent. (2015-07-12)

UPDATED: DEC 25, 2016 Bottle - dense, dark black, decent off white head. Coffee, liquorice aroma. Slight ting tongue and mouth. Good tasting coffee, liquorice - decent porter but not exceptional. 2nd dark dense, very large tan frothy head. Strong chocolate liquorice aroma. Good mouthfeel, slightly creamy tasting, liquorice finish - easy drinking with good bitter finish.

tombyars (1702) - Saltcoats, SCOTLAND - AUG 21, 2016
500ml bottle from Sainsbury’s Irvine. Poured into clear glass tankard, clear black mahogany in colour appearing very dark with a thick pale tan coloured head. Strong malty aroma with notes of chocolate and roast grain. Thin but smooth mouthfeel and good lacing. Dark malt complex gives a strong maltloaf base with dry notes of pontefract cakes, chewy roast grain and bournville chocolate are all in there. There is a slight earthy damp hop note to the bitter aftertaste but this fades really fast. Finish is robust but smooth with dark malt complex still delivering liquorice, bitter dark chocolate, treacle and old leather notes on the palate. For a 5% porter there is a lot going on and this is really far superior to M&S Meantime London Porter & M & S Cheshire Chocolate Porter (read my reviews!) Looking forward to getting this on cask - well Shepherd Neame?

Aroma of coffee, chocolate, licorice and hints of dried fruits and nuts. Dark brown to black with a red tint, tan head. Medium sweet and medium bitter. Medium body with a average carbonation. Overall an nice and enjoyable porter.

jjsint (3101) - Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, ENGLAND - APR 2, 2016
500ml bottle from Sainsbury’s. Very dark brown with a fair amount of carbonation. There’s a lovely thin layer of light tan head. Liquorice dominates the nose, but there is some black coffee and raisin as well. Taste starts quite sweet - again very liquorice-y - but turns to a bitter finish with some gentle hops. Long lip-smacking finish. Medium body. Fairly standard porter but done well.
