COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bishop’s Barrel No. 15 Barleywine aged in Rye Whiskey Barrels The base beer for Bishop’s Barrel No. 15 is an English Barleywine. The style focuses on malt complexity, rather than hops like an American Barleywine. The appearance is blood red with a thin, off-white head that lingers. Aroma is rich with deep caramel malt, toffee, and dark fruit notes. The rye whiskey character brings out more spice and oak than a bourbon barrel aged beer, which typically lends more coconut and vanilla. The high alcohol does not hide itself, but remains in balance with the thick body of the beer. While the beer coats the glass, it also coats the throat and mouth. This is to be enjoyed over a long session so as not to rush the blossom of subtle floral characters in the aroma as the beer warms. When swirled, the rich malt and whiskey comes out and reminds you this is a beverage to be patient with and enjoyed slowly. This beer is ready to enjoy now, however it’s built to age gracefully with proper cellaring. Enjoy between 55° and 65°. Date Brewed: August 6, 2015 Date Racked: September 18, 2015 Date Bottled: September 13, 2016 Beer style in bbl: English-Style Barleywine Type of Barrel: WhistlePig Rye Whiskey Barrels Original Gravity: 1.095 Final Gravity: 1.0173 Alcohol: 10.5% ABV prior to barreling 13.1% ABV after barreling Bitterness: 28 IBU

Not much head, but that's the only real issue I had with this, as it's a very good barleywine.

Tasting at Matt's
Amber color, clean. Aroma of marzipan, rye whiskey, foot, dark fruits, raisin, light vanilla, mildly earthy. Malt flavor, vanilla, too boozy.

330mL bottle, pours a hazy dark amber with a small off-white head. Aroma is intense, with lots of whiskey barrels, caramel, toffee, and brown sugar. Flavour is very boozy, with lots of booze, caramel, brown sugar, and toffee. This is extremely boozy and very malt-heavy. Not especially well-refined, but it's pleasant enough.

Amber, no head. On the nose, has some malty, caramel sugars, and it's about the same on the palate. Rich, deep sugars, fair bit of alcohol, Don't mind it - malty and boozy, has a sticky caramel character, just a touch of fruity esters.

Bottle - Sweet caramel. Clear copper with no head. Nice caramel, toffee and a long sweet finish. Sweet and very English, but Barrel is lost. Decent.

Not much head but what there is sticks around. Caramel, dark fruit, wood and rye spice. What’s not to like?

Chocolatey aroma, also spicy and a bit boozy. See through dark red color with no head. Sweet malty flavor with oaky depth from the whiskey barrel and a slight booze burn in the aftertaste. Thick palate, low carbonation.

3.2
Cajun (551) - Lafayette, Louisiana, USA - MAR 14, 2017
Bottle - Pours a deep amber-brown, this particular bottle is FLAT. Biff whiff of fermented fruit (figs, raisins, stone fruits) caramel malts, spice. Flavor of malted barley, figs, raisins, spices, cloves, fermented breads, toffee, bite of hops...warming alcohol end. Was flat, so mouth-feel was lacking.

jtclockwork (17769) - , New Jersey, USA - DEC 27, 2016
Bottle - pours dark brown - nose and taste of rye whiskey, oak, caramel, burnt toffee and cotton candy - medium body

(Draught at BrainDead brewing-lines cleaned 12/6) clear rich copper, fine white bubbles. Nose of rich caramel, rye whiskey, rum raisins, cherries and a touch of alcohol. Taste of cream, rye whiskey, wood tannins, dark fruit, fairly rich, light hops but mostly English style. Nice beer!
