Santo is a black Kölsch, which technically doesn’t exist as a style, but this is as close as we can come to describing it. Essentially it is brewed using a Kölsch recipe with the addition of Munich and black malt. It is light bodied and floral yet with a distinct dark malt flavor. Our goal was to create a dark yet refreshing beer that would pair perfectly with a plate of enchiladas. The label artwork is by Houston artist Carlos Hernandez who is known for his Day of the Dead Rock Star series of paintings and prints.

Nice lacing. Very malty. Slight spicy note in the finish. Not bad, but not a great beer.

Bottle via trade. Watery cola looking pour. Thin highly carbonated palate. Stale malts and maybe tea? Not really digging this.

Draft at Barley Oak. Clear maroon color, beige head. Aroma of roasty coffee grounds. Taste is light bodied straw and hay. Like a black IPA in reverse.

This has nothing like a kolsch existing. Over carbonated. Thin lasting head. Not sweet or floral. Good example of a ruined kolsch. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Tallahassee, Fl. - Brass Tap - on tap. Dark brown pour, decently thick off white head, nice lacing. Aroma is slightly nutty with some cola accents. Flavo is kind of bland, some light nuttiness, a brief wisp of chocolate and potting soli, but not too much going on here. Smooth mouthfeel - overall not very schwarzbier-like.

Sweaty, malty, aroma reminds me of English pale ale. Dark root beer brown. Clear. Big whitish head. Pretty bland and watery. On tap, Brass Tap, Tallahassee.

Tap. Pours deep clear amber red, small tan head, good lacing. Aroma is lightly smokey, caramel, grass. Flavor follows, light sweet, little bitterness, a bit smokey, smoked caramel. Medium body. Points for originality.

The beer most resembles a porter in my opinion. It is malty and medium-bodied with characteristics of a dark lager in carbonation and finish but the hop level and maltiness of a porter. An interesting and pleasant brew.

Saint Arnold Santo is an unusual style beer that seems to work. Little caramel aroma coming from a dark pour with a fluffy white head that holds nicely. Taste is does not match the dark pour, but has yeast notes like a wheat beer and no dark beer expectations. Listed as a Schwarzbier and described as a black Kolsch, it doesn’t seem to taste like you would think either would. Finish is fairly clean. Santo defies description but is tasty in its own right.

This is a fine beer. It is moderate in malt flavor, hop flavor, body, and color. It is well balanced and a good drink when a more substantial beer is not available. I enjoyed it.
