2.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
March 20th, 2012 - San Diego Beer Company is running with big animals in this town, and it’s not evolving to keep up. Their San Diego Tripel is more empirical proof that there’s a lot of so-so beer in this city, being served within the same city limits as real GABF level stuff. The smell begins with dry banana like esters, and the taste jumps in with a sticky sweetness and a disappointing flatness. It’s candied, with apple juice and more than a heaping tablespoon of sugar. Light carbonation supporting an overbearing, over sugared, over sweeter beer makes this almost undrinkable, and an underwhelming use of beer monies.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap at the brewery. A clean golden color with a very small bubbly head. Sweet big fruit, dry, lemon, banana, candy. Very nice. Above average for sure.

Possibly the best tripel I’ve ever had. It has all the spice, bread, banana, and other fruit flavors you want and love out of a tripel, and yet you get a little extra sweetness out of it which really just brings this beer into such an outstanding state of balance. Absolutely incredible effort by The Beer Co.
