Bottle at home. Bit of a gusher, some lost down the sink. Pours almost purple-black and opaque with a massive rocky head. This has the unfortunate effect of damaging the aroma, but some funky hop is still there with the dark roasted grain. Bitter to taste with only a short burst of initial sweetness. Roasted malts, chocolate, slightly salty flavours with a long dry finish.

Tap at Brugge beer festival 2016, Brugge, Belgium. A dark brown coloured pour with a huge beige head on top. Roasty, malty, chocolate aroma. Tastes roasty, malty, chocolate, hint of coffee. Nice one.

Alengrin (5156) - BELGIUM - FEB 9, 2016
Draught at BBF. Very thick and dense, creamy, nitro-tap like, lacing, yellowish beige head over a black beer with burgundy edges. Aroma of charcoal, roasted coffee beans and dito chicory, bitter chocolate, cold coffee grounds, iron, fig, dried porcini, dried tea leaves. Dry and umami onset (dried seaweed), very subtle salty touch but low in sweetness, rounded and very creamy, soft and bit thinnish body, coffee grounds bitterness, some iron but not overly metallic, peppery hop bitter touch in the end while the roasted bitterness continues. Dubbed and English style stout by the brewer but this seems closer to a classic Irish dry stout in most respects. Whatever it is though, this is convincingly Anglo-Saxon in style for a Belgian stout, have a point for that.

Donkerzwart bier met mokkakleurige plakkerige schuimkraag. Moutig aroma, gebrande koffie. Diepe volle smaak met bittere afdronk. Ondanks de 4,3 % alcohol een bier met pit, alleen misschien beetje te waterachtig.

Black colored, frothy tan head, nice lasting and lacing. Aroma is roasted malt, chocolate, some yeast and citrus hops, bit resin. Taste is medium to low sweet chocolate, some brown sugar, lots of coffee and some roasted malt. Quite bitter coffee dry finish and aftertaste. Medium to light bodied and average carbonation. Hops were more pronounced in the aroma than the flavor which is dominated by ground coffee. (bottle, Delirium Caffe, Brussels)

75cl bottle @ Shrewsbury Beer Share, Aug 15, courtesy of Mademoiselle Haddock. Pours black but gushy. Herbal plummy aroma. Quite a complex taste considering it’s just 4.3%. Grains, coffee with a big, dry tobacco finish. Not too much citra but still quite an interesting one.

33cl Bottle from Vonk. Black colour, beige head. Aroma of hard-roasted malts, salty caramel, tar, cocoa. Flavour is medium sweet, berries, roasted malts, burnt malts, tar, caramel, cocoa, chocolate, coffee, firm bitter finish. Light bodied, firm carbonation. Very tasty low ABV stout.

BlackHaddock (7038) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - AUG 20, 2015
0.75 litre bottle: bought at De Bierboom, Brugge and shared between five at the Aug 2015 Shrewsbury bottle exchange evening. It was a gusher, so each glass had a huge rich tanned head on it’s swirling black beer. Nose of chocolate and tobacco, earthy and peaty. The taste followed the aroma closely ending with a dry finish. Good effort and plenty of flavour for such a weak ABV Belgian beer.

Super agréable cette stout ni trop dry ni trop impériale. Généreuse, douce et crémeuse, sans excès de : torréfaction, douceur, alcool, amertume. Par contre la mienne à abondamment moussé à l’ouverture : gaffe !
