375ml bottle, pours cloudy orange gold with a foamy and frothy lasting white head. Aroma is medium caramel, coriander, dry white grape, orange peel, tangy citrus hop. Medium full bodied with a creamy texture and sweet taste, drying nicely into a short, balanced, dry finish. Carbonation is soft.

Into a Dupont chalice at just on cool. Misty, pastel orange body with very fine, streaming carbonation. Holds a Complex nose is fruity with a tinge of leavened bread dough and soft white cheese. Notes of banana, strawberry, salty preserved lemon, pink lady apples and Semillon grapes. Ultra dry, light and effervescent on first sip. Opens up to reveal a nicely sharp citric acidity in back. Lasting, rough, herbal bitterness in the swallow is matched by the fruit of the nose. The lemon is quite well pronounced, as is a bready malt profile to the front. A hint of vanilla and lavender builds as it goes. The body filling out somewhat. Alcohol is shy and irrelevant. Drinks with remarkable ease. Wonderfully balanced, lively and tasty number from this great brewer. Good stuff!!! (37,5cL, BBE 09/18, The Liquor Shed, Jandakot)

The only one in this series I missed so far, so I was happy to find a vintage bottle at The Beershop, cheers Kevin! The 2015 edition, dry-hopped with Minstrel (a relatively new English hop variety). From the typical 37.5 cl ’geuze’ bottle, under high pressure - and heavily gushing, with beer flooding out the bottle neck almost immediately after opening. Frothy, dense, cream white head leaving an irregular pattern of tight cobweb lacing on the edge of the glass, hazy ’old gold’ robe with pale orangey tinge; a ’mist’ of yeast bits throughout, perturbed by strings of fizz. Aroma of green apple, banana, peach, melting powder sugar, orange zest, yellow raspberries, straw, cooked carrot, dough, fried pineapple slices, chalk, sweet dessert wine, lots of clove-like phenols, green melon flesh, parsnip, vague old cinnamon, soap, mandarin peel, dry earth, even a touch of dry liquorish candy and only the slightest hint of oxidation, but hardly noticeable - if anything, adding a very light sweet sherry accent to the whole, quite elegantly so. Crisp, very fruity, estery onset, banana ester but subtle, surrounded by impressions of sweet red apple, ripe gooseberry and pineapple, sweet in its core but balanced by sourishness, spritzy but not too harsh, refreshing carbo fit for the style, but still numbing the tongue initially (unsurprising considering the heavy amount of gushing). Soft, fluffy, very lightly soapy body, very bready in the middle with a sweetish caramelly edge, carrying the fruity esters to a dryish finish that adds some spicy phenols, minerally accents and a lovely, earthy and indeed subtly citrusy hop bitterness, matching very well with the sweeter bready malt body, establishing a medium long, quenching finish with late but interesting peppercorn notes; fruity and malty juiciness remain along with spicy notes (cloves, even very faint liquorish) which probably arise from a combination of this particular hop variety on the one hand and phenols on the other hand. Too bad for the fierce gushing, but otherwise this is once again a beautiful Dupont saison, feeling a bit more mellow and sweetish than the other two renditions of the Cuvée Dry Hopping series; age has not ruined this beer at all, if anything, there is a vague sherryish accent only adding class and complexity. Highly drinkable, sufficiently complex and quenching: this is a saison of high standard, from which a whole bunch of these new farmhouse ales could learn a lot. Kudos to this brewery, which I still hold in high esteem.

Vintage 2015, Half champagne bottle.
