Cask; Occasional - monthly beer for December 2010, April 2012 and May 2013.
A vibrant stout with hints of blackcurrant and plum, the dryness of the body is tempered by an enveloping crescendo of coffee and chocolate that descends to a fruit filled finale.

BlackHaddock (7956) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - APR 26, 2013
Hand-pulled pint in my local Wetherspoons on 26 Apr 2013. Pours a lovely dark brown/deep ruby red: a creamy head sets it off nicely. Lacing clung to the glass better than sweat on a steamy window, and with a better odour! I like it when Salopian brew their darker beers (as Wilf, the owner knows): this was just up my street. Trouble is (for me anyway) the golden brews fly out the brewery door and his darker, maltier beers take some shifting at times: other Shropshire brewers are telling me the same thing and only brew golden beers currently. Roasted/toasted/slightly burnt molasses fill the nose and taste buds. The rich yet dry body seems to ooze dark berry flavours and they in turn enhance the coffee and chocolate traces that appear towards the end of each sip.

[cask at the Volunteer Arms, Musselburgh] Deep brown beer with a bubbly white head – looks like a pint of Coca Cola! Aroma of chocolate, nuts, raisins and caramel. Similar flavours – but there’s a lot going on here, some coffee too. Decent bitter hoppy finish. Glad I took a punt on this, having not had much experience with Salopian beers before – it was lovely [22062012]
