History: Shropshire Gold was first brewed in July 1998. We had decided that a brew was needed that could compete with the session beers produced by National brewers such as Bass as well as other local producers. We decided to make a beer that would have a rich gold colour to please the eye, a full rich flavour to make it appeal to those who preferred a stronger beer, and a pronounced hop character to please everyone! This concept obviously worked as sales have increased markedly year on year. Shropshire Gold now makes up over half the production of the brewery and is listed as the house beer in at least 40 local outlets, a testimony to a consistent product and a keen price.

Terrible beer, dry, straw flavoured. Typical looking pale ale, but with all the flavour removed

Cask @ Victorian Craft Beer Caf, Halifax. Clear golden with a frothy head. Has a surprisingly fuller tropical taste and a potent dry hoppy aroma for its relatively low strength.

Cask at the White Hart, Beaconsfield. Difficult one to rate this, as youll see. Amber-gold with an odd clumpy white head. Lots of floralness and some lemon. Really quite tart. Clearly the tartness is not meant to be there, this is clearly off. But oddly it works rather well with the beer and Im quite happy drinking it. At some point Id like to try this beer as its meant to be; in the meantime its possible that Salopian could actually successfully sell gone off pints of Shropshire Gold as "Shropshire Sour" and do quite well out of it. Which does raise some serious questions about the legitimacy of some of the other sour beers out there...!

Cask at Odfellows. Clear golden body with a medium white head. Good lacing. Aroma of earth, grass and herbs. Flavour of grass, earthy hops and lemon. Medium body with an oily texture. Soft prickle of carbonation. A decent cask ale, but not as tasty as Oracle.

Bottle. Golden and clear with a small head. Slightly bitter with some hoppiness. Plenty of flavour and strength for a good session beer.

Cask at Sun on the Hill, Birmingham. Good UK cask fare. Juicy, sweet, faintly perfumed Golden. Has sweet fruitiness aplenty for the abv. Sess-shun.
