The colour of an eclipse, the aroma is of char, chocolate & roasted malts and then the flavour of pine & citrus ascends over the palate, bringing the full bodied finish to a dizzying height.

First impression is of those blackcurrant and licqorice sweets. Also chocolate, red fruit, black cherry and roasted malt. Dark with plenty of off-white head. Full bodied.

Sampled from a bottle. Near black colour with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, blackcurrant and dark chocolate. Good mouthfeel and a taste of liquorice, blackcurrant and pine needles. Strongly bitter finish. A good Black IPA with plenty of backbone (ABV 7.2%).

Keg tap from the Coopers Tavern, Burton-on-Trent. Purplish black and opaque. The tiniest bit of sandalwood on top. Burnt malt, liquorice and pine needles in the scent. Sweet piney taste which I expected to be followed by an extreme bitterness, but no. Finish is more balanced but it is a reasonably sweet beer. Well carbonated with medium fullness in the body. Yum.

Cask at The Hanging Bat. Black body with a thin beige head. Patchy lacing. Aroma of wood, furniture polish and Ribena. Flavour of brambles, nuts and sweet chocolate. Medium body with a smooth, oily texture. Faint prickle of carbonation. Rich and sweet. A great beer that doesnt quite hit the heights of Polygraph.

Dark, lightly toasted malts, citrus fruits, earthy flavours, pine. Very dark, hazy brown, small, creamy, beige head. Light bitter. Intense toasted malts, lightly burnt flavours, cacao, pine, dark fruits. Quite an intense Black IPA, not bad though. Cask at CASK Pub & Kitchen, Pimlico.

(Cask at Southampton Arms, Gospel Oak, London, 20 April 2016) Black colour with foamy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of caramel, black rye bread and resiny hops. Malty, roasted taste with coffee, caramel, dark chocolate, a touch of smoke, black rye bread and a balanced piney bitterness. More than medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Tasty and well made. Nice one.
