Samuel Adams 1790 Root Beer Brew

RATINGS: 281   WEIGHTED AVG: 2.44/5   SEASONAL: Special   EST. CALORIES: 165   ABV: 5.5%
The intensity of this unfiltered brew is immediately evident with spicy, herbal notes of sassafras, wintergreen and licorice. These are balanced with the sweetness of caramelized sugar, molasses, and vanilla.

bottled. Where to start?... well the positve here is the smell of this fucker, and maybe originality... THE END. Maybe a little more is needed to prevent me from drinking this again. Starts out very medicinal & herbal, but all of this gets very muddled. I have the feeling tons of extracts and syrups were used, though I could be off. Half-way through was the end for me, just TOO MUCH GOING ON, IN TOO MANY DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS.

12 oz. bottle shared by someone in the lobby after the RB Best Awards - thanks to whoever brought this totally rotted garbage! Pours a clear brownish amber with no head. Notes of sarsaparilla, ginger, brown sugar, soda, cardboard, mint, earth, licorice. Light-bodied, with low carbonation and a sweet, spiced, herbal mouthfeel. Quite medicinal after all these years. Oxidized, but I honestly thought itd be worse. Fun to try.

Well I finally scored a four pack of the brewer patriot series. This beer is weird folks. Brown pour with a shitload of floating particles. Aroma of sasparilla, syrup and spices. I have no idea if this beer was actually good or not. It was weird with a capital W! Taste was very sweet and spicy with sasparilla, and A&W rootbeer notes. I dont think this was any good fresh. No way!

BBE Oct 06. Cloudy amber beer. Slightly dry palate. Medicinal herb bitterness and then some sweet fishermans friend sweets. Slight smoky note. Finishes with more of the same. Very unusual tasting beer. Nicely balanced between herbal bitterness and spicy sweetness. Goes down very well. Complex.

UPDATED: MAY 1, 2012 Very odd little ale from Sam Adams. Very high concentration of molasses in nose and mouth. It scored well with me, but I dont know if Id drink it again (if it were even available). Rated 9/10/06

Bottle. Pours a brown body with an off white head. Licorice and hints of birch and burnt and caramelized malt. Hints of vanilla and light woodiness, not bad.
