Bottle. Pours a deep orangish brown with almost no head or carbonation. Aroma is ripe fruit, some earthy oakiness, and a bit of funk. Lively and fizzy on the palate. Flavor is fruit, oak, a bit of metallic tang. Finish is dry, with a bit of lingering fizzy candy. Well done.
Hazy light amber-brown. Not much head, again fizzes out a bit too fast. On the nose, a fair bit of barrel, oaky. On the palate, similar. Moderate tartness, lots of oak, some bitter-tart fruitiness. Touch oily. A bit thin for its strength, but a nice balance between the tart-sweet elements.

Hazy , chestnut color. Medium-sized, off-white head. Oak , candy sugar, caramel malt and sour cherries in aroma. Caramel sweetness and cherry sourness in taste. Strong oak flavor. Somewhat overcarbonated , but in general interesting sour.

Decent sour red from Samuel Adams, full of tart cherry and lots and lots of barrel, drinkable but ultimately a little too oaky for its own good. Cherry jam on the nose with a mildly astringent undercurrent. Pour’s not great but passable, a dark red-brown with a tiny head and no lace. Taste starts with a cherry juice sweetness, then goes full-scale sour on the middle, a wine-laced backbone offering up cab and caramel. Finishes with a shitload of oak, though, bitter and clingy, vanilla and wood and a moderately medicinal bitterness that seems out of place. Fade is tart yeast and wood. Texture’s good, but something about the barrels used in these Sam Adams Barrel Room Collection beers doesn’t work for me. Better than the BA quad, at least. Stony Brook Red is far more malty and far less sour than any Flemish Red I’ve ever tried. I’m pleasantly surprised to find myself saying that as a compliment rather than a criticism. For this brew, there’s no denying that it works rather nicely. This deep red beer does have some mildly tart components in the forms of fresh cherry and earthy oak, but the malty sweet elements are given more of a chance to come through. There’s a lot of caramel and fruitiness. However, the tannins from the barrel aging keep this beer from being overly sweet. A- Copper color, hazy liquid, beige head.
T- Sour, cherry, candy, sweet.
P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, sweet finish.
O- Nice stuff. The perfect amount of sour balanced out with a touch of sweetness. No funk which is appreciated.

A 1pt 9.4 fl oz bottle with a best before date of 1st October 2017. Poured into a Lost Abbey teku glass. It poured a dark ruby reddish brown colour with a big three finger light tanned head that had decent retention and left only sparse lacing. Aromas were fruity tart cherry, red berries, grape, plum, caramel and a touch of vinegar. Taste was much less fruit than the aroma, sour, tart, cherry, plum, oak, alcohol and vinegar. Medium bodied and highly (overly) carbonated. Overall, taste was decent but I think its fruitiness was definitely affected by the harshness of the carbonation, which I felt mellowed it, when compared to the aroma. For me, the problem all stemmed from the harshness of the carbonation when swallowing, which I thought was way more than even any soda that I’ve drank before. 750ml cork bottle opened with loud “pop” bought at CitySuper in Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui.
Looks: Translucent reddish brown colour; Explosive four finger head and crumpety light beige foam which lasts for 3 minutes; Fair sticky lacing with fizzy carbonation.
Aroma: Very fragrant, strongly tart and sour full red malt, with strong caramel, strong yoghurt, strawberry, strong plums, dark frits, strong funk, red wine, malt vinegar, sugar, oak barrel, strong tannic and grass.
Taste: Strong sour red malt, with strong malt vinegar, very strong Barnyard funk, alcohol, lactic acid, red wine, liquorices, red fruits, grape skin, liquorices, light molasses, oak barrel, strong tannin, strong lemon, fairly strong bitter hops and grass.
Body: Mid to light body. Quite slick palate.
Mouth Feel: Full red maltyness in a pretty solid background. Loads of Brett funk to light up the tastebud, with surprising strawberry, plums and dark fruits you get from Strong Belgian Darks. Pretty boozy with strong liquorices. Very light sweetness which complements the red wine and red vinegar very well. Very notable oak barrels with strong lemon to round. Tasty!
Hoppiness: Grass in nose. Strong lemon and grass in taste; Bitterness - liquorice and hops - is fairly strong for an abrupt, mid astringent sour-malty finish.
After Taste: Quite dry. Funky, tart and lemony bitter to mouth.
Comments: Its oak barrel smell and taste is rather restrained. Instead it has very strong maltyness and the Brett funk and lactic acid taste just get loose with interesting fruityness, strong winey taste and harsh booze. Tasty, very drinkable Sour Ale and maybe only a step or two from being a great Flemish Red. Nice one before X’mas!
